@GreeneMan6@SpencrGreenberg@L0rdRevan_ Which part do you disagree with? That major religions have contradictions? Or that one of them being true implies the contradicting ones are wrong?
@jesscataylr@LarissaMVLopez@8bitminiboss ??? tell me I'm wrong. I know how search engines and SEO works, and I know how it gets abused. I also know that Google makes a lot more money from advertisers than users.
What part of this is rationalization?
@rational_guy_@Sdoy23@eshear@sidd_bang@prerat Haha yep, and that's how you end up with sayings that mean something slightly different than what the individual meanings of the words would seem to imply.
@rational_guy_@Sdoy23@eshear@sidd_bang@prerat I agree with you here, although I do believe that they should have an obligation to keep searching for better solutions, even if they're not obvious or easy, rather than accept the status quo because the donor money keeps coming in.
@rational_guy_@Sdoy23@eshear@sidd_bang@prerat The issue here is that if that's what the actions of the party result it, and continue to result, I wouldn't think it's wrong to say that. The people in charge of the party are definitely able to change their actions.
@rational_guy_@Sdoy23@eshear@sidd_bang@prerat Function is probably a better, more specific word, sure, but the quote/saying uses purpose, so that's what I was talking about. I'm also not making up this definition for the sake of an argument - I'm discussing the meaning of a word because I like words and language and meanings
@CEOofGlobalWarm@chillseraphim@prerat@chingonasupreme Nice! glad to see your local ice cream machine is also working! Even if the machine is functional most of the time, that doesn't mean it can't be broken for say, one day per month, and the repair company dutifully repairs it the next day, and repeat every month because of profit
@CEOofGlobalWarm@chillseraphim@prerat@chingonasupreme Ah yes, this one person's anecdotal evidence of this one machine being currently functional negates the other evidence that the machines are often not working!
Also, you seem to be using "reliable" wrong - currently working doesn't mean it will remain working.
@suchnerve It also feels better and more satisfying to let loose a powerful sneeze! It feels like you're less likely to have to sneeze again. The attention is just a happy little side effect! (For some people...)
@rational_guy_@Sdoy23@eshear@sidd_bang@prerat You have to look into etymology, historical usage, and etc. to get a fuller picture of the whole definition of a word. The dictionary is great for the surface level meaning, but it's not all-encompassing and the only source to be considered.
@rational_guy_@Sdoy23@eshear@sidd_bang@prerat Man, I'm not using its definition to support any argument, I just believe words have specific meanings, and to say they're the same is wrong.
Also, the entire definition, including subtleties and differences, can't be summed up in a sentence or two.
@rational_guy_@Sdoy23@eshear@sidd_bang@prerat Now of course, this isn't all that relative to the current discussion, but I'm somewhat autistic about language, words, and specific meanings, so I like to talk about this and will happily answer your question about it :)
@rational_guy_@Sdoy23@eshear@sidd_bang@prerat Intent is usually more personal, and implies a sense of agency, whereas purpose is usually more broad, and applies to impersonal things like objects, tools, systems, etc. It also leaves room for when something's purpose drifts away from it's initial intention.
