In this Viewpoint, @LawrenceGostin, @BenjaminMMeier, and @HHS_ASGA explore concerns surrounding possible US withdrawal from @WHO and the effect this would have on US global health leadership and health security.

@JAMA_current@LawrenceGostin@HHS_ASGA@WHO Examining challenges since the US presidential transition, @LawrenceGostin & I reply to letters received in response to our @JAMA_current analysis, considering shifts that have abandoned US influence in @WHO & undermined US leadership in global health. https://t.co/Cp4Sl6lddb
"As global norms are set and scientific standards issued, the absence of the US [from WHO] will undermine scientific research, health security, and foreign policy," write @LawrenceGostin and @BenjaminMMeier in a new #ScienceEditorial. https://t.co/5k93U97VdN
This #HumanRightsDay, the public health community is conspicuously silent – even as human rights will be crucial in facing the global health challenges to come.
I took advantage of the quiet to develop a thread looking back on our global health engagement. https://t.co/xTpFMTgCa6
@FCTCofficial An inspiring video to support the next generation of legal advancements to control tobacco. Would you please consider sharing on Bluesky so that it can reach the global health law community.
❗️Every year tobacco kills 8 million people worldwide, mainly in low- and middle-income countries where 8⃣0⃣% of the world’s smokers live.
And that annual toll includes 1⃣.2⃣ million deaths⚰️⚱️ just from exposure to second-hand smoke, over US$ 1⃣trillion in health-care costs and lost productivity, and the staggering loss of 6⃣0⃣0⃣million trees🌳, 2⃣0⃣0⃣0⃣0⃣ hectares of land, 2⃣2⃣billion tonnes of water, and the production of 8⃣4⃣ million tonnes of CO2… the impact of tobacco on sustainable development can no longer be ignored.
Over the years, the WHO FCTC has played a vital role in the reduction of tobacco use worldwide.
Since its inception, the WHO FCTC has been the driving force in tobacco control, establishing commitments and providing guidance and support on a wide range of tobacco control measures.
As we will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, we vow to build on our legacy of fighting for a tobacco-free world… for generations to come.
Let’s continue writing history… together.

I greatly appreciate @paimadhu for curating a list of #GlobalHealth experts who are moving to @bluesky. https://t.co/ly3iCPoDhm
Grateful for our community, I look forward to reengaging on social media (@benjaminmasonmeier.bsky.social) to uphold human rights in global health.
Having considered the #GlobalHealth implications of the US elections, we now return to power those who:
🔬 neglected #PublicHealth,
⚖️ violated #HumanRights &
🌎 undermined #GlobalGovernance.
How can we prepare the next generation to respond? https://t.co/I3gh4KlVcA

Public health hangs in the balance of this U.S. election.
Whether or not academic journals “endorse” a candidate, it is crucial that academic scholarship engage with the implications of elections, and it was inspiring to speak with @AnilOza16 about the #GlobalHealth implications.
we wanted to ask journals how they were thinking about publishing about the election tomorrow
they are walking a line btwn discussing the high stakes for health & medicine, while not wanting to be perceived as partisan
we talked to editors & contributors & #scicomm experts:
TOMORROW is the last day of early voting in North Carolina. Focusing my classes this week on the global health implications of the U.S. elections, it was inspiring to go to the polls with my global health policy students, sharing our hopes and fears at this existential crossroads
In the #Presidentialelection, much has been written about civility, equity & policy in the US. But what may be more consequential is a Trump admin that would torpedo global health institutions & unravel core values of global solidarity, partnerships, and global health justice.
The @oneillinstitute is honoring @LawrenceGostin today for his impactful career at the forefront of #GlobalHealthLaw.

An RFK Jr-led health disinformation coalition could cause permanent damage to our national immunizations. Even though vaccine policies are set by state legislatures, where I am in the Southern U.S. + elsewhere the trickle down would be catastrophic: measles pertussis, even polio
