we’re like 9-15 months away from realizing that these ladies were actually keeping all the engineers in line and preventing them from shipping an endless barrage of retarded features that don’t actually solve any problems.
As a very simple mental model for all of human progress - it’s a function of how many people have A. the time to think, and B. the social stability to share and accumulate knowledge across people.
The ancient Egyptians were leaders in learning because the Nile produced a bumper crop, allowing mathematicians and accountants and bureaucrats to exist. Same pattern everywhere. Advancement comes only with social stability + excess resources to enable idle time and specialization.
there’s many reasons to be skeptical that “finance culture” as such is a good/healthy thing, but there’s not a single day where i didn’t wish that tech would adopt its wasp norms around basic decency, discretion, and eschewing this gross vulgarity. really low class stuff.
I saw recently some guy on here claiming a 40% discount on lumber at Lowe’s/HD. Had to be rage bait cause that ain’t true…BUT if you do get a pro account you can save 30%-40% on flooring, appliances, electrical and pretty much anything besides lumber. (Lumber is a low margin item so they don’t drop it too much)
My electrician didn’t even know about this. I asked him recently “where are you getting your wire?” He said “Often Lowe’s/Home Depot because of convenience”. I said “You add the items to your QUOTE page on there right?” He said “What’s that?”
I proceeded to take my laptop, go to the Lowe’s website and add a bunch of wire and conduit to section that says “Quotes”. Once I got to $2,000 for the order, it dropped 37% off the price. He was SHOOK because he’s been paying full price for years.
“Well, my day job is being a billionaire cofounder in the defense-tech space, but that’s not what defines me. My real passion is my side project -- a think tank that advocates public policy to enslave the homeless”
A great view is one of the few pleasures you never really get used to. It somehow escapes hedonic adaptation.
Which is why, once people can afford almost anything, a view is among the last things they give up.
What’s interesting about this reading list is not only the obvious level of difficulty but how much more interesting to the average boy this is than many current lists
@Empty_America I’d pay 10k for a carpenter to just enhance/swap out whatever ff&e he pleased as long as it looks cohesive in the end (or maybe special request abstract idk) like this guy

Once you get in the habit of making a big pot of chili to last an entire week you quickly lose interest in a good portion of worldly pursuits. The Pot supplies
