@fabulavancouver Technically I was speaking as a member of the Vancouver Area Neighbours Association. Similar people but slightly different mission statement.
Single stair building codes unlock the potential for small lot multifamily housing that goes beyond what you can do with a multiplex or townhouse.
Instead of townhouses where every unit loses 150sf to a stair, you have a nice central stair serving 6 to 24 homes.
For Immediate Release,
-- Statement from Dupinder Saran, former BC Conservative Candidate for Surrey-Panorama:
Effective today, I am withdrawing my name from the ballot for the 2024 BC election campaign. I recently removed myself as a BC Conservative candidate following John Rustad’s secret deal with Kevin Falcon. At that time, I announced I would run as an independent candidate.
I am very disappointed with how the Conservative Party of BC has handled this entire process and I feel disrespected as a racialized candidate. However, the weaknesses of John Rustad have also been made clear to me. Before I became an independent candidate, there were hateful anti-Sikh posts circulating and Rustad’s BC Conservative party refused to defend and support me. It has become clear that I was used as a “Brown Token” for the party, to serve their purpose of attracting Sikh, and minority supporters and then easily cast aside. Another BC Conservative position that made me realize that they do not represent me was that they are actively considering bringing back the RCMP in Surrey if they are elected. I do not think the people of Surrey want to bring back this old debate that has gone on for far too long .
For years, I have worked hard to establish strong relationships in my community and my supporters encouraged me to continue representing them as an independent - but we cannot run the risk of John Rustad’s candidate being elected in this riding. I no longer believe that the Conservative Party of BC holds the values that they pretend to. If they can’t stand up for their candidates, how can they stand up for Surrey ?
I have decided to endorse and throw all of my support behind Jinny Sims, the BC NDP Surrey-Panorama candidate and incumbent.. As one South Asian woman to another, I will support Jinny in whichever way possible. With myself as a Registered Nurse and Jinny as a retired teacher, together we can support Surrey’s healthcare and education needs to benefit our community.
Signed
Dupinder Saran

I’m really trying to understand how this is supposedly safer than ~20 units (5 floors x 4 units) wrapped around a single stair.
Our double loaded building has up to 6x more people per stairwell…
here's what our road network would look like if we designed it like our bike network. Try drawing routes from one point to another, and then try to recite the labyrinthine directions from memory. Now you understand why actually doing things on a bike in this city is so annoying.
Today, for the second time, a three-storey 11-apartment building was refused planning permission in my central Toronto neighbourhood.
Serious planning reform can’t come soon enough.
A major way people deal with housing pressures is to double up. Current households should not be treated as fixed, especially when estimating housing shortages or targets. @LausterNa and I illustrate this via the difference between households and families. https://t.co/f7iblEpG7u
Vienna's first Dutch-inspired bicycle street is nearing completion on Argentinierstraße; totally transforming the 1.3 km corridor.
140 car parking spaces were removed to significantly improve the walking and cycling experience; while adding abundant trees, planting, and seating.
@InklessPW@SeanFraserMP @MeaneyJim If we had German levels of death by fire we'd have half of what we do in Canada. We should be striving to do better than Germany not hold on to our fire regulation framework that produces worse results.
There are many places where government regulation has led to fewer homes.
Requiring a minimum number of parking spots is absolutely one of them.
@MikePMoffatt and I discuss that on today's episode of the Missing Middle.

@alyssa_jayne There's the added irony of this person saying that YIMBYs want to force their ways on others when the low density that exists and has caused the market imbalance is in fact NIMBY laws being enforced on everyone.
@Lanefab@Lanefab do you have a mock up of a 6 storey building on a 33ft lot, 50% lot coverage? Is such a building financially viable, buildable, and pleasant if single-stair gets allowed?
Patrick Condon has had this question answered in his Twitter replies hundreds of times. He could have saved everyone a lot of trouble by reading those instead.
Moderator @pmcondon2 reiterated a perplexing question:
If building new supply produces affordability, then Vancouver should have become the most affordable. But that did not happen. Why?
12 out of 18 of these proposals will block apartment developments allowed under existing policies, 2.5x more housing than proposed, not including effects on assemblies.
This is why we can't make it harder to build apartments than houses & plexes.
