@bretwp More of an issue I think when you have pages that are in your sitemap but not accessible via a crawl.

Google will show you a "Discovered but not Indexed" issue in GSC.

@bretwp I would look at your Google Search Console under each Sitemap and look at your indexation report. Do you have pages that aren't being indexed because they're discovered but not being crawled?

HTML sitemaps give Google the ability to crawl which should improve your indexation.
