So Denmark and its NATO partners spent billions expanding Arctic defenses, accelerated surveillance and drone capacity, increased naval and troop presence around Greenland, and pushed Arctic Sentry forward, while much of the buildup was publicly framed as a response to pressure created by Washington’s takeover rhetoric.

Greenland’s government rejected U.S. control and insisted its defense remain within NATO, while European allies rallied around that position. And now, after all of that, Denmark and Greenland are moving toward an agreement that gives the United States a permanent security role and substantially greater military access.

If the buildup was primarily about protecting Greenland from American coercion, why does the end state look so much like the strategic outcome Washington wanted in the first place?
