The still secret modelling done for Australian government set 20% infection rate as lower bound - ie 5.2 million Australians. Do the maths. What proportion of that number infected seriously and die? COVID is SARS. Clear that serious repercussions for "recovered" patients. Absurd.

Agreed. "Controlled release" was basis of disastrous UK policy that said basically "let it in and let it run". Abandoned by them too late. To judge by Australian non-actions in Jan-Mar, that was our policy as well. How can there be herd immunity without a vaccine? Beats me.
