Ecstasy at a memory brought to fruition, gratitude to those who shaped it, and a heartfelt thought for those absent:

- Contemplating this immense monument erected in the heart of Paris on the banks of the Seine in memory of the victims of the genocide committed against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994, inaugurated on June 2, 2026, by two Heads of State, French and Rwandan;

- Observing the gazes, meditations, and moments of quiet reflection, filled with both emotion and the pain of a heavy past, yet mindful of the achievement and significance of this historical monument;

- Reflecting on the poignant testimony of survivor Jeanne Uwimbabazi, abandoned in April 1994 by UN peacekeepers at the Kicukiro Official Technical School in Kigali, who survived thanks to the soldiers of the Rwandan Patriotic Army;

- Strengthened by the words of comfort, hope, and truth from the two Heads of State, which the entire audience received with strength and encouragement for a better future;

- My deepest thoughts naturally turned to the more than one million Tutsi victims of this terrible genocide. They then turned to the memory of so many men and women, known and unknown, who worked to ensure that the history of this genocide would be preserved in France.

- I thought particularly of those who passed away in recent years, who, from July 1994 onward, made such striving for truth and justice, and who would have been happy to be here with their friends and acquaintances. From the heavens where they now reside, they are surely proud of their comrades whom they left behind on this earth, comrades who did not fail in their duty.

I write these words so that these departed souls, whose kindness and commitment I know, may also be part of this completed project and that their names may not be forgotten in this long, 32-year journey of struggle for memory and truth. Let us think in particular of Jean-Paul Goûteux, François-Xavier Verschave, Sharon Courtoux, Gilles Duroux, Jean Carbonare, Géraud De La Pradelle, Marie Odile Godard, José Kagabo, and Théogène Karabayinga, to name but a few.

Your absence is forever a perpetual presence.
