I think it’s time to revisit the accredited investor laws in the US.

Companies are staying private longer, where only accredited investors (aka rich people!) can invest. Retail investors can only come in after IPO, when much of the upside has already been captured.

These rules were created with the best of intentions, to protect regular people from scams - a noble idea. Unfortunately, in practice they've often made it illegal to get richer, unless you're already rich. A regressive tax!

We have to judge policies based on their outcomes, not on their intentions.

These are two possible routes I see:

1) Replace the rule with something merit-based, like a financial literacy test. Pass it and you're accredited. Having a qualification based on competency rather than your bank balance or income seems far more fair.

2) Remove the rule entirely. Let consenting adults assess their own risk. Disclosure requirements stay and fraud enforcement stays to punish bad actors.

i’d argue you’re too easily moved by the choice words. “privilege” and “equality” are selected because they confuse the notion of fairness. another way to frame his statement “if you’re accustomed to succeeding due to hard work, ingenuity, risk/sacrifice, and, sure, some amount of luck, having the outcomes reset so that everyone is rewarded more equally feels unfair.”

is succeeding after making good choices, sacrificing personally, and working hard really “privilege”?

is it oppressive that everyone doesn’t get to the same place?

perhaps the real oppression is the loss of individual liberties when naively egalitarian philosophies mutate into marxism, denying opportunities for individual sacrifice, effort, and achievement to be rewarded.

framed as privilege v equality misses the mark.. equality of opportunity and equality of outcome are v different things. silicon valley’s most successful are the immigrants who found america as one of the only places on earth where an individual with zero baseline privilege can struggle and sacrifice and effortfully succeed. calling them privileged after the fact seems hardly the point. but an easy one to make.

2 days ago, I drove through this plume of smoke and ash not far from home as I needed to pick up meds for my son who’s had a high fever for a week.

Earlier that day we were deciding what to take and what to leave to the fire as the evacuation warning was issued.

I turned to something familiar that gave me a sense of normal.

I ran indoors on a treadmill as the air was toxic outside, tho the app bugged

2 days later, we are still under evacuation warning but I am grateful and feel blessed

At the same time I’m sad for those who lost everything
