Why are nightmares so common in PTSD?
Part of the answer lies in REM sleep, where fear memories are consolidated and trauma-related memories can reactivate.
Let’s look at how traumatic memories can resurface during REM and contribute to recurrent nightmares. 🧵👇
Grief isn’t tidy, and it doesn’t follow a schedule. For some people, it’s a quiet ache. For others, it’s an ambush that borrows the body’s alarm system. Just know that however it shows up for you, you are not alone. https://t.co/GECtGVA0ME
The International Diabetes Federation has officially recognized Type 5 diabetes, a long-overlooked form that affects 25 million people globally.
For decades, diabetes classification primarily centered on Type 1, an autoimmune condition, and Type 2, driven predominantly by insulin resistance and lifestyle factors.
However, the official designation of Type 5 diabetes by the International Diabetes Federation addresses a critical diagnostic void. First observed nearly 70 years ago, this distinct form—previously referred to as malnutrition-related diabetes mellitus—stems from severe, long-term undernutrition during early developmental stages.
Chronic lack of essential nutrients impairs normal pancreatic development, resulting in severe insulin deficiency without the metabolic markers typical of Type 2 or the autoimmune destruction seen in Type 1.
Because standard diabetes therapies often target insulin resistance, applying conventional treatments to Type 5 patients has frequently proven ineffective or even dangerous.
The formal recognition of Type 5 diabetes marks a major turning point in global endocrine health, paving the way for dedicated clinical trials, specialized treatment guidelines, and improved diagnostic protocols.
Medical leaders emphasize that establishing a distinct classification will accelerate global research and expand access to life-saving healthcare resources for tens of millions of undernourished young people who were previously misdiagnosed.
