As I was flying to meet @neiltyson last week, cruising along, enjoying Gladiator 2, I realized, to my horror, that ancient Romans had a term: "Suppositicii" - disposable gladiators.
Built-in obsolescence, but for humans. The kind of gladiators you'd find in the clearance section of the arena, if Roman amphitheaters had clearance sections. Which, in a way, they did.
Modern academia is also an arena.
Only instead of lions, we have tenure committees.
Instead of swords, we have peer review and PowerPoint.
And instead of glory, many end up as… Scholarly Suppositicii.
