Total annihilation. All backed and facilitated by Washington and London. Democrat and Republican. Labour and Tory
Nothing will be the same again. The mask is off. And it’s never going back on
Two weeks. Unpaid. Before 24 weeks. Miscarriage, a termination, IVF that fails.
The law has finally admitted the loss is real.
That is not nothing. Women and partners have been walking back into shifts with empty bodies and a smile for the rota. Recognition matters.
Unpaid leave is the British state in miniature. It names the grief and invoices it. Other bereavement can come with pay. This one comes with flexibility and a reminder that compassion must not cost the firm.
A civilised country pays the time.
Until it does, this is a foothold, not a settlement. Take it. Then fight for the wage that makes the fortnight livable.
Gramsci called it hegemony.
The ability of a ruling class to maintain dominance not through force alone but through the consent of the governed, consent manufactured by controlling the cultural common sense of an era.
The genius is that it doesn't feel like control.
It feels like common sense.
It feels like: of course markets allocate resources most efficiently.
It feels like: of course the dollar is the reserve currency, what else would it be.
It feels like: of course the person who worked hard and made good choices became wealthy.
It feels like: of course dissent is permitted, look how free we are to dissent.
The things that benefit the structure of power are experienced as natural.
The alternatives are experienced as radical, unrealistic, naive, or dangerous.
You don't need to silence speech when you've shaped the common sense that determines which speech sounds credible.
Not everyone will remember it but there was a time when this was almost impossible to imagine. It seemed almost certain this man was going to die in Belmarsh or spend his remaining years in some hellhole in America. Never let hope die. A better world is possible. Anything can be.
One of the many ways in which Gaza has changed everything.
People in their hundreds of millions are refusing to accept complicity, are refusing to accept silence, in the face of genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and colonialism.
A few years ago, taking a stance against the mainstream imperialist narrative would have been a bad business decision for a famous musician. Nowadays, you’d better raise your voice or accept a future of derision and irrelevance.
Palestine is the clearest test of political consciousness of our time.
The oppression is naked, the complicity vast, the double standards grotesque.
To watch tens of thousands of children slaughtered and a people subjected to daily humiliation and say nothing exposes the hollowness of your politics.
History won’t have to judge the silence. Billions of people already do.
Those who still don’t grasp this are revealing a profound moral bankruptcy, oblivious to how discredited they have already become.
Kudos to #Macklemore for speaking with moral clarity, and shame on #EdSheeran.
Kicking the ‘don’t commit genocide’ guy off your tour because it upsets the people who support the genocide is actually a blatant display of taking sides. There’s nothing neutral here, not even close.
What is the price of a man’s soul? Ed Sheeran, who has accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars, when pressed by a few racist billionaires, sold his for access to a few money-making venues. And just like that, his legacy is forever tarnished. He will always be remembered as the guy who, from a position of extraordinary comfort and privilege, chose complicity over courage in a time of genocide.
“Yo I just want to let you know you’ll have to leave the tour because you saying ‘end the Holocaust’ has offended the small group of rich and powerful Nazis I’ve spoken to. I am neutral by the way.”
