We are absolutely ecstatic to celebrate Camille Fowler for #cascience Teacher of the Year for HS! Camille is a life long learner & one of the reasons she became a teacher. "The best way to learn something is to teach someone else!" Read more - https://t.co/650BXMZy0I #cascience23
@sandiegozoo Thank you for the Teacher Workshop in Conservation Science. It was an amazing three days filled with hope for our wildlife and ecosystems. I am so grateful for the research, resources, people, and learning.
Ocean drilling ship @TheJR has two giant propeller shafts deep below decks, pushing it through the water.
Driven by five locomotive engines, the props run at 9,000 horsepower, roughly 45 times the power of an average family car 💪🏼

WHY DO WE <3 CORE?? It can tell us what the environment in the ocean was like millions of years ago! Watch this 3-minute video to see how we do it #Exp395#JRSO

A pyritized benthic foraminifera! Pyrite has begun to crystalize in the area that once held living tissue. More cool things are coming from the core! #Exp395#IODP
When deep-sea cores come up to the surface on @TheJR, they are slightly pressurized.
We drill holes to let them expand and prevent cracks in the plastic core liner - creating these cute little mud worms 🪱

Each #Exp395 core is about 30 ft long - a new one arrives on deck from the Atlantic seafloor every HOUR...
After being split in half, the team get straight to work taking thousands of measurements and samples. @TheJR labs are now a 24/7 data factory!

#IODP Expedition 395 is on site! We're going to core right down to the ocean crust, through 1 km of mud and rock.
It will take us all night to build the drillpipe and drop it through a hole in the ship to the seafloor 2 km below. Check out how bendy it is!
