@ddowning24 @DrPorcher I had a similar response! I hope to teach that there is no "correct" or "incorrect" form of English. It is essential that our future students feel comfortable in our schools. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher As a future teacher, it will be my responsibility to make all my students feel comfortable in my classroom, no matter what language they speak. I want my students to be able to speak freely and not worry about being judged. #teacheredumatters#ELE301#TCNJEduLions
@emmaclarkud @DrPorcher I agree! It's interesting to see how Black English terms are banned in classrooms because they are looked at as informal. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher Anti-Blackness has been woven into my understanding and teaching of the course content because my teachers in public schools look at language as correct or incorrect, not accepting Black English as a language. #teacheredumatters
@mschloecastro I agree that the word guidelines is restricting and that it should be removed from our definition of grammar. If we want everyone way of speaking to be accepted we should make the definition more broad. #teacheredumatters
I think we should remove “should be” and replace it with “can be”. Grammar does not need to be read, written, spoken, or understood in just one way. We can use grammar seen as “incorrect” and still be understood. #teacheredumatters
@emmaclarkud @DrPorcher I agree! It would be great to hear from people that wouldn’t normally speak due to fear. I think it would make people feel relived to openly show their backgrounds. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher People would be able to feel comfortable with the way they speak. If they feel comfortable they will be able to share more ideas and not worry about being taken seriously. I hope this is a world we could come to! #teacheredumatters
@bluehenraye @DrPorcher I agree! We should stay in our lane. People have no right for judgement when it comes to someone’s dialect. We should think before we speak. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher I can ensure that my comments don’t cause harm to others by thinking before speaking. I will always respect the way someone is speaking since everyone comes from different backgrounds and should feel comfortable talking in public. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher My “mother tongue” would be looked at as formal standard English. She is a second grade teacher and has to teach English. She does relax and use slang when in our house or with friends. #Teacheredumatters
Today's class challenged my understanding of formal vs. informal language by showing how we don't need to worry about switching between the two. We should embrace the way we speak.

Informal language is more casual and personal than formal language. Informal language is used when speaking to friends and family. I think anyone gets to decide whether language is formal or informal. #teacheredumatters
