✨ Chess schools worldwide can become part of any child's educational journey. In Vitez, a small town in Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦, the chess club tries to bring children together to teach them about life through chess.
♟️ "The Vitez 2013 Chess School currently brings together around 30 children and young people. Our aim is to make chess accessible to every interested child, regardless of their family's financial circumstances. Through regular training, tournaments and club activities, children learn not only chess, but also concentration, patience, responsibility, logical thinking, respect for others, and how to deal with both success and disappointment.
We regularly travel with our young players to tournaments in different parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, giving them opportunities to compete, gain experience, make new friends and discover the wider chess community. In the future, we would love to give them the opportunity to travel and compete beyond our country as well, allowing them to meet young chess players from other countries and cultures.
We are also particularly happy to see a growing number of girls joining our chess school. More and more girls are showing interest in learning and competing, and we want chess to be equally welcoming and accessible to girls and boys. Seeing children of different ages and backgrounds — girls and boys alike — sitting together at the chessboard is one of the most rewarding parts of our work.
🔸 The impact of the club therefore goes far beyond the chessboard. We want to provide children with a safe and positive environment where they can spend their free time learning, developing friendships and feeling that they belong to a community. Parents, coaches, volunteers and local supporters become part of this community as well, making chess a way of bringing people and generations together.
🔹 As part of our efforts to bring chess closer to the wider community, we recently organized a special event called “Chess Goes to Town” (“ŠAH izlazi u grad”). The highlight was a simultaneous exhibition by Croatian Grandmaster Alojzije Janković, a chess author, television presenter and passionate promoter of the game. Children, club members and members of the local community had the opportunity to play, socialize, analyze games and celebrate chess together in a very special atmosphere.
Events like this allow us to take chess beyond our club's walls, making it visible and accessible to the wider community. Most importantly, they give our young players an opportunity to meet accomplished chess players, learn from them and experience chess as something much bigger than their regular training sessions."
👏 Kudos to Miroslav Ivančić and the team behind the Vitez 2013 Chess School, which combines chess, community, and culture as part of the educational journey of the child.
