In ten months, the United States has torched eighty years of alliance architecture that its own soldiers, diplomats and taxpayers built from the rubble of the Second World War. Eighty years. Gone. Detonated, with a smile, by people who genuinely believe this is genius.

Canada is not drifting away. Canada is leaving. Europe is not hedging. Europe is building a defence industry specifically designed to cut Washington out. Allies are not quietly grumbling over dinner. They are signing contracts with other people.
And the MAGA faithful are cheering every single step of it, because someone told them this is what dominance looks like.

Nightmare from the USA

What is happening in the United States bears all the hallmarks of an Orwellian nightmare. Truth is being disregarded to such an extent that authorities instruct people to interpret obvious events in a way that contradicts what their eyes see and their ears hear, but is consistent with ideology. This is how every totalitarian system begins. President Donald Trump has recently declared that international law means nothing to him, because his only restraint is his own morality. Hence his demands for the annexation of Greenland are not even cloaked in the pretense of legality, but instead openly present the law of force. Because the United States has a stronger army than Denmark, it can simply take Greenland. This logic turns the world into a nightmare. If the strongest democratic country openly becomes an imperial power that does not even respect its own treaties, because they may be ignored whenever the morality of the commander-in-chief allows it, then it means that all treaties worldwide will now be worth only as much as the military force backing them. Under this logic, Poland could take Vilnius because it has a stronger army than Lithuania; Italy could annex Tunisia because it can; France could attack Switzerland and seize Geneva (provided it does not lose a war to the Swiss), and so on. Such a world would be a nightmare.

The recent events in Minnesota, where an immigration agent killed a woman who did not immediately get out of her car, have shaken, I believe, most of us. And it is not even the tragic event itself that is the core issue, because crimes of this kind occur in every country. The issue is that the President, the Vice President, and police authorities publicly declared that the agent who fired three shots into the woman’s face acted correctly. Such contempt for obvious facts is pure Orwell. What is more, the entire Republican Party began repeating the blatant lie that the agent acted in self-defense. Political interest compelled them to deny what they themselves saw and heard and to repeat a version openly contrary to the facts. Everyone saw three shots fired into the woman’s face, yet they claim the agent was defending himself. And this is the most frightening part of all, because it means that power is no longer constrained by the conscience of congressmen, senators, or officials. Such power is absolute power, and all absolute power corrupts. The United States will need decades to recover from Trump—if it ever emerges at all from this hell of absolute and unchecked power exercised by people stripped of any morality and any respect for truth.

Some will say that I am undermining the alliance with the United States. I am not. I myself voted to send Polish soldiers to Afghanistan when the United States was attacked on September 11, 2001. I consider NATO to be the best alliance in the world. However, the truth is that any potential assistance from the largest NATO country now depends on an unpredictable individual. If one can threaten the forceful annexation of the territory of a NATO member state (that is, war with Denmark), then the credibility of U.S. guarantees for NATO countries is effectively nonexistent. This is a sad but true message. We must seek allies in Europe and ourselves be strong enough that others will want to help us. Then no one will attack us. This is the lesson of brutal realpolitik that we must accept from Trump’s behavior. Realpolitik has returned with full force.
