Here's a little-known fact about Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who will be beatified on September 24, 2026 during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV: Venerable Fulton Sheen was actually… biritual.

While he was ordained and served as a bishop in the Roman Catholic Church (Latin Rite), he received special canonical faculties from Pope Pius XII to also celebrate the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite.

Fulton Sheen embraced the Byzantine Rite largely as a way to show spiritual closeness and solidarity with Eastern Christians, many of whom were facing severe persecution by communist regimes behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. In 1955, he celebrated a Hierarchical Byzantine Divine Liturgy for a crowd estimated at over 100,000 people at a major pilgrimage in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. This was a landmark event: it was the first public Byzantine Liturgy sung in English and the first ever celebrated by a Latin Rite bishop with special Vatican permission. He also provided commentary for the Byzantine Divine Liturgy during the Melkite National Convention in 1958, which was recorded and broadcast on national television. By doing so, he introduced the rich spiritual treasury of the Eastern Catholic Churches to millions of Western Catholics who might otherwise never have experienced it.

Through his biritual faculties, Archbishop Sheen acted as a highly visible bridge between the Eastern and Western traditions of the Catholic Church.
