Currently writing about the way the idea of the 'barbarian' (anyone who isn't Greek) is politically weaponised in Euripides' Hecuba to justify violence. Feels horribly topical.

The UK government has revoked the student visa of Dana Abuqamar, a Palestinian law student and leader of the Friends of Palestine Society at the University of Manchester, following her speech in a university demonstration. Abuqamar said that her visa was revoked on the grounds of 'national security', with authorities citing her as a risk to public safety.
Abuqamar revealed that she had lost at least 15 relatives in Gaza when the Israeli army bombed a three-storey building in the besieged enclave.
The Government must publicly call for an urgent ceasefire & implore Israel to end this heart-rending attack on Rafah.
A full-scale attack would be a tragedy, killing countless more innocent Palestinians, displacing families & making it harder than ever to provide lifesaving aid.
@torcheculs I do love Juliet's 'Gallop apace' speech...There's a chapter in Heather James' book 'Ovid and the Liberty of Speech' on Juliet, which I seem to remember does some interesting things with textual history (as well as Ovid, obv)

@rhetorician@MrDanielBuck I also hate this take, and I can't believe that in 2022 the same lazy stereotypes about single parent families are still being peddled.
Delighted to learn of the existence of an early Italian story of Romeo and Juliet called Julia and Pruneo https://t.co/qr16ho4TPL
