Lung Transplant Update – July 31 (Last two paragraphs are the most interesting.)

Late this afternoon I spoke with my Vanderbilt care coordinator, Elizabeth.

As previously noted, the MRI/MRE is scheduled for Friday, August 7 at IU Health. Because it falls on a Friday, results would not reach the selection committee until August 14.

If the study can be completed earlier in the week, I could potentially go before the committee on the 7th. Elizabeth will check Monday for any cancellations that might open an earlier slot.

The MRE is now mandatory. A small splenorenal shunt was noted on the CT reread, and the study is required to determine whether this represents a new finding.

Low fibrosis scores on the MRE would support the conclusion that it is a sequela of the 2020 radiation treatment.

They prefer that I bring a caregiver for the compliance testing on August 12, so I am arranging that now.

A useful look behind the scenes: There are currently eight people waiting for lungs at Vanderbilt. Blood type O patients generally wait the longest. I’m A+.  Of the eight currently listed, the person who has been waiting the longest has been on the list only three weeks as of today. 

Last week Vanderbilt transplanted five patients. Once listed, things move quickly there.

The advocate comes through the DAs office. Since the DA was conflicted out (Joe early troopergate story) they cannot provide and advocate. Therefore all communication goes through the special prosecutor, just as it did with Krusty. Hope that clears things up and all continues to go well for you

He walked up expecting someone to sign for a package.

Instead, an 8-year-old boy ran out of the house and threw himself into his arms.

James had been delivering on the same route for six years. He knew the neighborhoods, the families, and even the dogs that barked at every stop.

But one house always felt different.

The blinds were always shut. It was always too quiet.

As he approached the front door with a package, it suddenly flew open.

Standing there was 8-year-old Ethan, barefoot in Spider-Man pajamas, shaking with fear.

Before James could say a word, he heard glass shatter inside the house, followed by an angry man screaming.

Ethan didn't ask about the package.

He ran straight to James, wrapped his arms around him, and cried, "He's hurting Mom! Please!"

Without thinking twice, James dropped everything, picked Ethan up, and rushed him to the safety of his delivery truck.

A neighbor had already called 911.

While they waited for help, James sat on the back of the truck, holding the terrified little boy close and shielding him from the house.

"I've got you, buddy," he kept saying. "You're safe. I'm not going anywhere."

For nearly ten minutes, he stayed right there until police arrived, entered the home, arrested Ethan's father, and made sure his mother was safe.

To his company, James was just another delivery driver running behind schedule.

But to one scared little boy in Spider-Man pajamas, he was the hero who showed up exactly when he was needed most.
