🚫 Gender-based violence (GBV) in sports must stop 🖐🏾.
🛑 In Kenya, more than 1 female athlete out of 5 faces sexual harassment. Some world-class champions, like Agnes Tirop, Damaris Mutua or Rebecca Cheptegei, were murdered because they were just following their dreams - running. Many sportswomen, mostly young, suffer in silence, fearing stigma, exclusion, abuse and exploitation.
✖️ In #Iten, home of champions, women stood up to empower female athletes & tackle GBV in sports through bold initiatives:
👉🏾 Viola Barsulai founded the "Don't Touch Program", a child protection and safety initiative designed to empower children when facing unsafe or inappropriate behaviour. It teaches them to say "No!" and walk away by raising awareness & engages teachers, parents, and coaches to create open dialogue and build trust around children's rights and well-being.
👉🏾 Several elite athletes including Joan Chelimo founded Tirop's Angels to support victims and promote gender equality in sports through education and awareness, in memory of the double world medalist Agnes Tirop. Based in #Iten, the organization works to shift mindsets.
🤝 On Oct. 25, France in Kenya supported a "Beyond Olympics, a milestone sports awareness event in Iten, @ElgeyoMarakwetC, to provide educational activities in schools alongside festive and sports components - sensitizing young boys and girls to GBV in sports. In the context of the #PinkOctober month, 500 women registered to a medical tent dedicated to cancer screening, helping address health barriers for girls and women in sports.
💪🏾 Alongside its partners in Iten and Kenya 🇰🇪, France will continue to promote sport as a tool for empowerment and a means to combat GBV.
