Remembering our veterans who have served.
@HalCranmer’s newsletter honoring his grandfather on Memorial Day was particularly poignant.
Always a worthwhile read.
Listening to “The War was in Color” in the honor of so many.
A pioneer in Alzheimer's prevention just dropped a 60-minute masterclass about it on the Levels podcast.
Dr. Perlmutter shared 8 shocking insights about your brain you probably never heard of:
1) Type 2 diabetics have a up to 4x increase risk for Alzheimer's
@VeganLinked@KenDBerryMD Ticks are spreading their territory rapidly. Use to have 1 in NJ now 5, all with diseases. Gulf coast species now in Ontario.
% of ticks with disease ⬆️as plant & mammal biodiversity ⬇️.
Overpopulation of starving deer is a big driver of invasive plants driving out natives.

Solution? Reduce deer over population.
Keep more ranch & farm land from converting to suburbs.
Reduce invasive plant populations. With less deer native plants and mammals ⬆️. Diseased tick % ⬇️.

@KenDBerryMD Lone star tick now as far north as Ontario.
NE had 1 tick, now have 5. Let's slow disease spread
How? ⬆️plant biodiversity⬇️invasives ⬆️natives.
How? Reduce deer over-population (7-10 x in NJ)
How? Conservation hunting, does vs. bucks. Aim down
Why? ⬇️cattle ⬆️deer

@Kat46330310@KenDBerryMD A larval tick feeds on an infected mouse. Gets bacteria.
The tick then passes bacteria to its next blood meal, but not to tick offspring.
Most mammals aren't hosts so tick disease stays low if biodiversity is high.
If mice predominate, then more tick bites transmit disease. /x
@KenDBerryMD Deer overpopulation killing US forests. Replacement trees all eaten by starving deer
Deer-vehicle collisions in US:
Accidents 1.3 - 2.1 million
Damage $1 - 10 billion
Human injuries 10 - 58k

More reasons cattle ranches, wolves, & big cats good for humans
@KenDBerryMD Ban cattle ➡️ farmland converted to suburbs⬆️
⬇️ in natural predators: wolves & big cats
⬆️ in woodland edge habitat vs. forest ⬆️ deer
Deer & cows are both ruminants
Unintended consequence of ⬇️ beef herds
⬆️ ruminant population (deer).
Deer more expensive to harvest.

@matthewbaszucki Wow. I had no idea it was that bad.
My mom always told me the psych ned side effects were horrific and refused to take them. A relative with a similar diagnosis did.
After decades the difference between them were stark. Appreciate your honest education about the realities.
There isn't an easy answer.
Many of the major neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, alcohol use disorder, Alzheimer's disease, and epilepsy, have been associated with increased risk for glucose hypometabolism in different brain regions.
The challenges include the following:
1. Brain energy metabolism changes throughout the day, so sometimes it might be within normal limits and other times it might be reduced compared to controls.
2. Brain glucose hypermetabolism can also occur, likely representing hyperexcitability of neurons, which can also represent abnormal brain function. For example, this has been shown in manic episodes and specific circuits related to OCD.
So... it's not as simple as reduced brain glucose metabolism. Instead, I would say it's dysregulation of brain energy metabolism, resulting in either underactivity or overactivity of neurons. Some scientists will argue that the metabolic changes are a consequence of neuronal activity, which may very well be true some of the time. The more disruptive concept is that the changes in metabolism, and more specifically mitochondrial function, may be driving neuronal activity.
@matthewbaszucki@realDaveFeldman You're making a difference.
Love watching you "find your voice" as the telling of your story has been honed over the last 3 #CoSci's.
Nice to see folks coming into their own. 2/n
@matthewbaszucki Interesting. Thanks for clarifying in this post. I heard you and @realDaveFeldman discussing it on Dave's podcast, but the extra context here is helpful.
I also appreciate your offer for free coaching. You've already signed up an internet acquaintance whom I referred. 🙏💪🍀
