From 1 July 2026, Sri Lanka will impose 18% VAT on digital services provided by non-resident platforms. This brings cross-border digital services into the VAT net, aligning Sri Lanka’s tax system with global best practices adopted by many countries.

Sri Lanka’s 18% VAT on digital services is not a Digital Services Tax (DST). It’s a consumption tax collected from customers, in line with global VAT/GST practices. Trump’s warning targets DSTs on U.S. companies, but it’s still worth watching whether the U.S. broadens its stance.
