"I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu)..."
On August 25, 1991, a 21-year-old student sent a message to a Usenet newsgroup. He thought he was just building something fun for himself.
35 years later, that "hobby" is the backbone of global technology:
🚀 Powering helicopters in space with NASA
☁️ Running the global cloud and 100% of the world’s supercomputers
📱 Connecting billions of people
🎮 Redefining the future of handheld gaming
What started as one student's side project became the greatest collaborative technology movement in history. Thank you to every maintainer, contributor, and advocate who made it possible.
Happy 35th Birthday, Linux. Here’s to the power of open source and the next 35 years of building together.

Official notice from the Indian government to GitHub regarding the removal and disabling of bitchat.
Governments that fear people talking without permission will always go after the tools that make it possible.
Delhi Police Commissioner has just been handed detention powers under the National Security Act for three months, till 18th October 2026.
This is a colonial era law. No trial. No lawyer. Detention up to twelve months.
And it comes right when the state is moving to crush CJP protests.
This is not security. This is fear of dissent.

As tensions rose during the student protest in Delhi, the Sikh community stepped forward with a powerful act of humanity. As police dispersed protesters, several Gurdwara Sahibs opened their gates to students seeking safety and relief.
Many students rushed to nearby Gurdwaras after the police action. Some were injured, while others were affected by tear gas and needed a safe place to rest. The open doors of the Gurdwaras offered comfort during a difficult moment.
Volunteers immediately came forward to help. Free medical aid was provided to injured students, drinking water was distributed, and sewadars worked tirelessly to assist everyone who arrived.
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, Rakab Ganj Sahib, and Sis Ganj Sahib remained open to anyone in need. Community members also announced that students could stay overnight without any questions, ensuring no one was left stranded.
The tradition of Langar continued as hot meals were served to every visitor without discrimination. This long-standing Sikh principle of selfless service once again became a source of hope for many people.
Videos of these moments have gone viral across social media, with many praising the Sikh community for choosing compassion, service, and humanity during a time of crisis. The scenes have touched hearts across the country.
