I find it inexplicable that the murder of children of color like Caleb Rios at the hands of violent criminals like Waldo Mejia never seems to generate nearly as much attention and outrage as cases of police misconduct.   

Is it not systemically racist to leave communities of color disproportionately exposed to repeat violent criminals who belong nowhere near the streets and subways of New York?  Why do black and brown lives seem to matter only when the perpetrators are police but not when the perpetrators are violent criminals? Why the double standard?

I want to live in a New York where no mother has to bury her own child because he was stabbed to death by a violent repeat offender who should have never been allowed to roam the streets in the first place.

The lesson learned from the preventable murder of Caleb Rijos (14) is painfully clear: Stop releasing violent repeat offenders. New York can no longer remain the only state that prohibits judges from considering the public safety risk of cold-blooded murderers like Waldo Mejia. Enough is enough.

In the span of six years, the number of felony assault re-offenders has risen by nearly 150%. In 2024, the number of burglary re-offenders rose by more than 60%; the number of robbery re-offenders, by more than 80%.

A nearly 150% recidivism surge is not an inevitability. It is a policy choice. The State of New York has chosen to repeatedly release repeat offenders who terrorize and brutalize innocent New Yorkers.

I don't know if City Council is math ignorant, simply ignorant, and/or willfully deceitful, but when we "reform" away so much short-term detention from jail (which oddly they call "prison") the _average_ length of time in jail will increase. This isn't complicated. It's math.

“Harm against Harm” properly utilized for bail/remand of recidivist. Hold judges to account✅

Facts matter — but the story does NOT change! I was given incorrect information through numerous verifications as to which judge released this individual. My post, my responsibility! With that, an apology is owed to the Honorable Judge Machelle Sweeting.

Nevertheless, the story remains the same.

The NYPD did its job by arresting a person preying on NYC residents✅

The DA did their job in handling the case and requesting bail✅

The judge still did NOT do their job by releasing this criminal back into our city❌

We have an obligation to keep our city safe. New Yorkers need to be informed!
