China’s EV battery market in H1 2026:
🔋 Domestic power-battery installations reached 335.6 GWh, up 12.0% YoY, with growth moderating.
📈 Despite lower installations in February and March due to holiday effects, every month in H1 except those two remained above last year. Monthly installations rose from 42.0 GWh in January to 76.5 GWh in June.
🚗 Growth was supported by higher commercial-vehicle production and rising battery MWh per vehicle. With commercial-vehicle output and battery capacity continuing to increase, installations are expected to remain on a steady upward trend in H2.

Exxon report:
“Global electricity demand to grow 65% by 2050 driven by industry & data centers
Global energy-related CO2 emissions to fall to 30b tons by 2050, far above 11b tons needed
Emissions in 2050 ➡️global temp rise of 2.5 - 3oC”
We are toast

Qiming Hu, Chairman of Zigong Cemented Carbide Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China #Tungsten & Hightech Materials, is under investigation for suspected serious violations of discipline and law.
A weibo blogger commented it is related to illegal sales of #tungsten. #China #CriticalMinerals
🚨 #CATL plans to invest (~US$200M) to build a new #lithium materials production base in Ya’an, Sichuan, according to a Sept. 17 report by Cailian Press.
The project is planned to include annual capacity of:
• 40,000 tonnes lithium carbonate
• 30,000 tonnes lithium dihydrogen phosphate
• 130,000 tonnes sodium sulfate (Yuanming powder)
The announcement is currently only the first public notice of the project’s environmental impact assessment. No construction timeline, funding source, raw-material supply plan or expected commissioning date has been disclosed yet, and the project has not yet received environmental approval or officially started construction.

Chinese utility-scale solar and onshore wind project delivery times are 2-5x faster than the EU and US, mostly due to permitting times. Source: https://t.co/TN5CYH8BrV
@Peter__Wood Permitting is the whole story. China treats grid connection as a solved constraint, the EU spends 3-6 years consulting. Masdar clears utility-scale solar in months for the same reason: consolidated approvals.

“There is perhaps no car manufacturer more than Volkswagen where Germany’s erratic approach to electrification is having a greater impact.” https://t.co/aWYEl2klld
Digitalisation is transforming China’s #copper#smelting industry: increase in operating efficiency, better fuel consumption control, and steady growth in feeding efficiency and output.
Behind these results lies a transformation in management—from “relying on experience” to “letting data speak.” By turning data into actionable insights, the operation is steadily driving greater efficiency, productivity, and performance. #mining #hardtoabate #sustainability
Copper smelting is entering a bizarre phase that outsiders may struggle to understand.
Treatment charges have fallen to around -$200/ton, meaning smelters are not only getting paid nothing to process imported copper concentrate—they’re effectively paying to do it.
At that level, a rough calculation suggests losses of around RMB 1,000 per ton of copper produced.
Yet many Chinese large #copper smelters aren’t shutting down. In fact, operating rates are still rising.
So why keep producing when the economics look this bad? #smelting
CBW view: This is largely market hype.
Automakers hoping to cut costs by building their own battery plants or outsourcing production may find the economics less attractive than expected. Once you factor in depreciation, underutilized capacity, R&D, labor, supply-chain management, and capital costs, some in-house production models could actually end up costing more than simply buying batteries from #CATL. #battchat #batteries #electricvehicles
The geographic concentration of critical mineral supply chains continues to grow, especially for refining
Rare earths are the exception. The top supplier's share fell from 90% in 2023 to 85% in 2025

China: 36m
USA: 10.5m
Japan: 8.5m
Korea: 4.3m
Germany: 4.1m
