It won't be perfect, but this is my contribution to the debate.
I believe a full review of PACE powers & safeguards relating to the removal of clothing (i.e. #stripsearches and seizure of clothing) is in the interests of #police & public (esp. #children and #vulnerable people).
Published today, our report on #PoliceSearches of people, hopes to shine a light on the current police powers and safeguards under PACE, highlight areas of concern including and beyond the #ChildQ case, and contribute some ideas for change. https://t.co/emvBcw3B7a
@DianaJohnsonMP It was a genuine pleasure to meet with you this week to discuss #AppropriateAdults and how the lack of statutory provision impacts policing and vulnerable people. I only regret the timing! I hope the next minister will share your interest. Good luck in your new role.
Powerful. And a reminder of why @AA_NAAN continues to push for more help for #police officers to identify people who may have vulnerabilities (requiring an #appropriateadult under PACE 1984).
@LouiseShorter19 @AA_NAAN A lovely man, who is very generous with his time. A former trustee in fact. Strangely enough he came up in another conversation today and we were musing on who (if anyone) will fill his shoes as an expert witness when he finally retires. His perspective is so broad.
@LouiseShorter19 @AA_NAAN It would be at least some consolation if this case were purely historic and could not happen today. But we are still having to call for:
- More effective identification of vulnerability
- A statutory duty to provide #appropriateadults for vulnerable people

@LouiseShorter19 @AA_NAAN Thank you for flagging up the next court date Louise. We've been following the case with interest. Many find it hard to believe anyone would confess to a crime they didn't commit! Expert witness in this case Prof Gisli Gudjonsson is a @AA_NAAN patron https://t.co/GoE2jr0bYb
Giving evidence former @AA_NAAN trustee Professor Gisli Hannes Gudjonsson said there was a "high risk" that Campbell, showing "acquiescence" to "relentless" questioning, wrongly admitted to the crime. https://t.co/NLjQyEqHJ6
Pleased to see perimenopause, menopause, & post-menopause symptoms recognised as a potential factor in PACE vulnerability (meaning #appropriateadult support could be applicable). @CustodyVisiting has done a huge amount on menopause in police custody. https://t.co/jvuDqozT3r
Congratulations to the Young Advocates on their latest report! @the_AYJ@LeadersUnlocked
It presents findings & recommendations to improve youth justice, from peer engagement with 90 children & young people across England & Wales.
Read it here: https://t.co/Fc62TLANT3
If your child, family member or friend was arrested or questioned by the police, you might be asked to be their #appropriateadult. Would you know their rights? Would you know your own?
We've put together a video “Being an appropriate adult” to help 👇
https://t.co/fqg5pXqwwH
Find out why cases like this could still happen today @ https://t.co/sSViDEvD8D
We're calling for:
- Evidence-based tools to help police identify vulnerability
- A legal duty to PROVIDE #appropriateadults for vulnerable adults (to mirror existing duty on police to secure one).
@PatAlexTea @bespaceaware Thank you so much for sharing this, and for your service as an
#appropriateadult. I've taken a screenshot of this and, with your permission, we'll use it in training. *How* we do things is as important as *what* we do.
Thanks to all who attended our AGM today 🙏
We were delighted to confirm re-appointments of Shadae Cazeau, @Anne_MarieDay & @aibrahim09 to our Board for a second term! We’re very grateful to have their support.
Wishing all @the_AYJ members & friends a lovely long weekend! 🐣
📣 Today is the launch of #TheBigAmbition, informed by over 1 million children, including those impacted by crime & justice.
Great to see ambitions focused on ‘keeping children safe from crime’ that @the_AYJ looks forward to pushing forwards with @ChildrensComm & the sector 🙌
This week, I chaired the AGM of the APPG on Children in Police Custody.
Thanks to @RobertBuckland, @Valerie_VazMP & Lord Carlile for serving as Officers and to the APPG’s members.
Thanks also to @BevanMiranda who works so hard as the Secretariat.
Great team doing vital work!
Excited to share some findings from my PhD research exploring university admissions policies for people with criminal records. Most universities continue to require applicants to disclose their conviction which can impact access to #highereducation.
AYJ Comment: Concerns about vulnerable children at Wetherby YOI underline need for urgent overhaul of custody.
@HMIPrisonsnews report on @HMYOI_Wetherby finds inappropriate use of force, inadequate oversight & shocking treatment of girls. https://t.co/ODUvPJCEj0
