She stands waist-deep in roses, arms raised toward branches that seem to be swallowing her rather than framing her. Calbet worked mostly in pastel, and it shows here — the blurred edges between skin and petals make it hard to tell where the woman ends and the garden begins. Painted in 1917, while France was still deep in war, this kind of soft, decorative nude was exactly what Salon audiences wanted: a retreat into beauty, not a reflection of the moment. The flowers aren't just decoration, they're doing most of the compositional work.
