Clint, that's a strawman. No one says scripture forbids a society helping the poor. We oppose government welfare funded by forced taxation because the gospel calls for voluntary charity, self-reliance, family responsibility, and Church assistance, not state coercion. King Benjamin taught freewill giving from our own substance.

The Church does not teach that government (esp. the fed gov) should administer welfare. The Handbook simply acknowledges existing taxes and counsels us to use available resources when needed; it does not endorse the system itself.
