I reread @jk_rowling’s 2008 Harvard speech a lot, especially this line:
“There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you.”

One of the hardest but most important practices: realize that you are not the stuff inside your head. You are the awareness that decides what to do with the stuff inside your head. The ability to choose which thoughts to pursue and which to leave behind is key to everything.
Parents: Be careful chasing scholarships in sport.
They are far fewer than you think.
Examples:
I was #1 in the nation and received way more partial offers than full.
As a college coach: we had conference champs on next to nothing. And all-Americans on way less than 50%
Stop one rep short.
Stop one sentence short.
Stop one meeting short.
Stop one problem short.
Remember: the goal generally isn't to get every single thing out of yourself today but rather to develop a consistent rhythm over many days. Okay to push, just not too far.
Recipe for a miserable life:
- Focus on what others have and what you don’t.
- Be jealous of other people’s strengths while focusing on your weaknesses.
Recipe for a happy life:
- Be thankful for what you have.
- Focus on your strengths.
- Celebrate the strengths of others.
