Between September 2024 and February 2026, the federal government lost approximately 118,000 employees working in scientific fields.
The concern is not just the loss of jobs - the United States may be losing an entire generation of scientific capacity that took decades to build.
The new NAEP isn’t all bad news. The kids who weren’t in school when we shut it down for 1-2 years are rolling through the system and starting to out-perform the ones who were in elementary school when schools were closed.
Boys & low-income kids saw the biggest upswing.
It is useful to re-establish basic facts about US inequality:
U.S. income inequality has increased since 1985
U.S. wealth inequality has increased since 1985
The polarized debate is entirely about how big these increases are.
@Dale_Chu@lesley_muldoon@NAEP_NCES what impacts will this have on their quality of life - relationships, work, productivity, creativity, kindness, etc?
@Dale_Chu@lesley_muldoon@NAEP_NCES I'm pro-classical pedagogy and direct instruction. I also understand that reading is an important cognitive skill. That said - what consequences of kids using more visual/auditory input through social media/phones are there compared to reading instead?
Are colorectal cancer rates really on the rise in the young??
The shape of the incidence curves suggest not. Something happened around 2013. That something was the ICD classification system allowing neuroendocrine tumors of the appendix to be considered malignant colorectal cancers.

It’s amusing to read the phrase “growth we can only dream of today.” The average growth rate of the U.S. economy between 1950 and 1973, when the top marginal income tax rate exceeded 70%, was actually higher than it was during the Reagan era.
@rooseveltinst Only politics stop funding SS - nothing prevents the Tsy and Fed to coordinate and markup accounts in the SSA accounts - they are the sole monopolist supplier of the currency.
@DanielBerglind What do I do if my Deadlift is spot on to that factor, my bench is close, but my squat is far off (only 2x) - chalk it up to genetics. do more leg work? etc
@dylanwiliam@MartinCothran Mute and blind would surely be barriers to measuring G that said maybe, then, the issue is calling it intelligence. A brain can have an aptitude independent of intelligence.
@ZKForTre Especially since "debt" is just a Tsy asset that bears interest where Cash does not bear interest that's it. Debt, federally in the US, isn't an issue
@dylanwiliam@MartinCothran to try to find the middle ground, would we agree that in order to have intelligence in one area, G would still need to be sufficient enough?
@stevemagness I don't think enough is written on the best way for 400-800 runners and how to achieve enough aerobic foundation to support their respective events. Any good literature?
