Another good design by Dennis
Although pitch shapes are a great way to bring out diagonal affordances
I prefer placing the goals facing diagonally on an orthodox pitch shape
That way you find the balance between players perceiving a game affordances & perceiving diagonally
The new 5-second throw-in countdown is creating a problem at the World Cup… ⚽️
At the World Cup, we have seen a new throw-in rule introduced:
If the referee feels the throw-in is taking too long, he can start a 5-second countdown.
I believe faster throw-ins are good for football. I work with “The Long, Fast and Clever Throw-in” myself.
But what I predicted before the World Cup has happened:
Because of the time pressure, we are seeing many 50/50 throw-ins down the line into pressure duels.
And that is not good football.
The problem is not the 5-second countdown.
The problem is teams not knowing how to use the throw-in strategically.
What teams should NOT do:
❌ Get the ball slowly
❌ Change the thrower
❌ Let players stand still
The referee will lose patience.
Instead, teams should:
✅ Get the ball quickly
✅ Read the opponent’s defensive pattern
✅ Find the open spaces
✅ Create space if it is not already there
✅ Use sequences (not routines)
✅ Make smart throw-in decisions based on risk vs reward
The World Cup teams probably don’t have time to add this now…
(But you can still fly me over 😉)
Looking forward to helping more clubs improve their “Long, Fast and Clever Throw-in” in the upcoming season.

Unlocking the Half-Space
Objective: Recognize and use the half-space to create attacking chances.
Improve movement, timing, combination play, and finishing.
Set Up:
2/3 of a pitch.
Reds attack the full-size goal.
Blues defend and counter into two mini goals.
Play 7v7, with reds using a diamond midfield and front three.
Blues defend in a 4-3 shape.
Explanation:
Reds build attacks by finding players in the half-space.
Players look to receive between lines, combine, and play forward.
Blues try to win possession and counter quickly.
The practice creates realistic attacking and transition moments.
Coaching Points:
Scan before receiving.
Good body shape to play forward.
Time runs into the half-space.
Use movement to create space for teammates.
Attract pressure, then exploit the open space.
React quickly when possession changes.

¡EL FACTOR HIDRATACIÓN! 💧🏆
Spain dominated the ball and created some good chances but I thought that Cape Verde's defensive tactics were great in shape and in synergy of their movements.
I took a closer look as to how they drew 0-0 (🧵)
Spain didn’t utilise these movements enough, with the wingers coming narrow the Cape Verde back four was extremely narrow
If Spain’s full-backs pushed higher, Cape Verde often ended up in a flex back 5/6 with their wingers dropping in to block the lanes
A diagonal entry pass into the winger coming inside ~ followed by a late arriving run from the full-back would’ve been a nice pattern to exploit, especially considering there was a lack of central combinations w/ opposing movements to drag the block apart between the defensive & midfield line for the interiors to operate
🇸🇪 Want to play like Sweden's deadly front two? Here's how to develop the movement that led to their 2nd goal vs Tunisia! ⚽
This pattern of play is designed to help you develop synchronised front 2 play on the training pitch. Drill it, own it, use it in games. 💪
How to lose the duel (DONT try @ home)
no.1 — one foot plants, the other has to drag over to meet it. The start of momentum and balance being lost. The sign of losing the duel
no.2 — intial narrow foot placement forces a larger step, which is planted. The duel is now fully lost
Btw, these are very cool as a tactical/analytical tool
Not entirely sure on some of the operational definitions for how it's coded but a 50-page+ report for each game with full in/out-of-possession data, plus physical metrics, line breaks and run types

Tension
You can see in this clip, the GK creates tension by baiting the yellow opponent to bite(step), then right at the edge he exploits the advantage by playing into space for orange, who uses the cascade of defenders stepping to play across for his teammate. #fundamentals
