You have a duty to God to become more competent, disciplined, and influential than you ever imagined yourself capable. You must become a weapon against evil.
One of the claims in “Terra Incognita” that readers have found most interesting is that income per capita and fertility are now positively correlated across OECD countries: the richer a country is, the higher its fertility.
To document this claim more carefully, I have completed the following exercise.
I take total fertility rates from the U.N. World Population Prospects 2024 and real GDP per capita from the new Penn World Table 11.0 (expenditure side, chained PPPs, released in October 2025 and now running to 2023). For each year from 1954 to 2022, I compute the rank correlation across countries between fertility and real GDP per capita and plot the results. I use 30 of the 38 countries that are OECD members today (regardless of when they joined). I drop the other eight because they have data gaps, as former socialist economies did not compute GDP using the standard methodology (Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia).
In the mid-1950s, the correlation among the 30 countries was about -0.32, and it deepened through the 1960s and most of the 1970s, until a minimum of -0.78 in 1977. This is the world most people have in mind: the opportunity cost of children rises with income and, the richer you are, the fewer children you have. Gary Becker and dozens of economists wrote papers trying to understand this pattern.
But then, in 1977, well before anyone had heard about smartphones, social media, or some of the other “usual suspects” behind the recent drop in fertility, something changed: the rank correlation started climbing in a steady way, becoming positive in the second half of the 2010s. Right now, being richer means having higher fertility rates. And, as far as I can tell, there is no indication this trend is slowing down.
So, if you have a favorite explanation for the evolution of fertility over the last few decades, ask yourself: how can my explanation account not only for the drop in fertility but also for the rank correlation switching directions in 1977?
A couple of warnings. First, I use the rank correlation because it is immune to outliers. Luxembourg and Ireland report GDP per capita figures that nobody should take at face value.
Second, I am using the U.N. World Population Prospects 2024, which I have criticized for overestimating the fertility rates of the poorest OECD members (Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Türkiye). If you use the fertility rates reported by their own statistical agencies, the rank correlation is even more positive. But I don’t want anyone accusing me of fiddling with the data.
Finally, credit where it is due: I first learned about this reversal from Doepke, Hannusch, Kindermann, and Tertilt, “The Economics of Fertility: A New Era,” in Lundberg and Voena (eds.), Handbook of the Economics of the Family, vol. 1, North-Holland, 2023, pp. 151-254. Anyone who wants to go deeper should start there.
Comments always welcome!
It is precisely in times of societal stress and turmoil that we need our leaders to remain calm and rational.
They can't just look back and say, "Yeah, it was a crazy time and we all lost our heads and said insane stuff!"
No, they failed the test and can never be trusted with power again.
The rise and fall of wokeness: DEI commitments in corporate securities disclosures filed with the SEC. To me this seems a trailing indicator; most other measures of wokeness take off well before 2019 and peak in 2020 or 2021. But the shape! That's what a moral fashion looks like.
I was clearly wrong about Anthropic. They are obviously currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon.
And I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor. That’s not my style.
Tesla open sourced its patents and we made the Supercharger network available to all competitors, even though we could have made it a walled garden.
SpaceX launches competing satellite systems with no increase in price or use of unfair terms.
Even my worst enemies can attack me on this platform.
…
I come back to this speech every once in a while:
“in the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80% of those matches
… what percentage of points do you think I won in those matches?
only 54%.”
Unfortunately, I completely agree that the United States of America is rapidly descending into all-out conflict between left and right.
The Luigi left, Kirk killers, anti-Tesla terrorists, and Altman attackers are already in shoot-on-sight mode against conservatives, libertarians, and technologists. The right isn’t there yet; they’re called reactionaries because they only react, so they’re always one cycle behind. Thus, the left has already started shooting while the right is still “only” mirroring the lawfare of last decade’s left. But anyone can see how incandescently angry the American right is getting, so one can expect them to mirror leftist tactics eventually, just as J6 followed BLM.
A problem then arises. You see, when communists and nationalists duke it out, technologists tend to be hated by both sides…and tend to leave.
That’s what happened in Europe. In the early 1900s, Europe was the undisputed center of science. But then the far left rose to power in Russia, and in response arose a far right in Germany, and then those two psychotic factions blew each other up and took much of Europe with them.
The result was that scientists with options left. Shown below is the graph of Nobel prizes. Science used to be centered in Europe when America was still a relative backwater…renowned for cranking out widgets but not much else.
Then, as Europe tore itself apart, the smart scientists (and capitalists) simply left for America. Many had no choice; you just couldn’t be a Russian capitalist in the Soviet Union or a Jewish scientist in Nazi Germany, no matter how many years your family might have been in the country.
Passionate protestations of ideological loyalty and everlasting patriotism didn’t matter. At best the enemy classes and races were unbanked and denaturalized; at worst they were simply killed.
And arguably, all of that — the communism, the nationalism, the wars — all of that arose from the disruption wrought by the Industrial Revolution. We might anticipate similar levels of disruption from the Information Revolution.
If so, if America is torn between Democrats and Republicans, or Wokes and MAGAs, or whatever factions succeed them, it’s just not going to be a good place for technological progress. Instead, progress will decentralize to other locations around the world, as it did before.
L'égalitarisme a creusé l'inégalité.
On a saboté ceux qu'on voulait aider.
Dès qu'on refait. Dès qu'on transmet. Dès qu'on crée.
I thought about when & why I did change my outlook on things. What's going in my life, where am I going, how do I lead the team at work, the future in general, politics, simply everything. My old views on things were, plainly speaking, just not grounded enough in reality & logical thinking.
It is after reading @DavidDeutschOxf, that, step by step, I started to see the world with different eyes. I would not have read this book w/o recurring recommendations by the great @naval, who I quickly came across on Twitter after joining in 2019.
This is the most important book I have read in my life. The concepts I learned are a great north star. I am rereading the book right now. There is a ton of content on the it to better understand the core concepts here on X & YT by @ToKTeacher@arjunkhemani@astupple & many others.
Read it & see for yourself… 👌 👇
