I was the last scientist Susumu hired.
I joined his lab before the pandemic carrying an idea that was ambitious, uncertain, and still largely unformed. He believed in me before there was any reason to know whether the work would succeed. When institutional pressure mounted, he defended my right to pursue the science. He gave me the freedom and resources to follow the idea wherever it led, until the only real limit was my imagination.
Susumu taught me what it means to be a rigorous scientist. To distrust easy answers. To follow the evidence even when it leads somewhere you did not want to go. To demand more from an idea precisely because you love it.
We rejoiced together when an experiment revealed something beautiful, and we were equally miserable when months of work collapsed into failure. Science was never abstract around him. It was something you lived intensely, with your whole mind and body.
Some of my warmest memories have little to do with the laboratory. I think of the many evenings I spent with Susumu and Mayumi in their home, sharing a delicuous Japanese meal and talking about science, life, history, and the strange paths that bring people together.
My hands are seriously shaking as I write this.
With his death, I cannot escape the feeling that I was the last seed he planted in an extraordinary scientific lineage. The responsibility of carrying something of him forward now feels heavier than I can express.
Of all the lessons Susumu taught me, the one I will carry most deeply is seik��hō. When you do something, confront it directly and head-on. Commit yourself completely, with all your strength.
That is how Susumu lived as a scientist.
That is how I will carry his legacy forward.
