Promoting Cybersecurity Awareness: The First Line of Defense
The CIA's playbook on how to ruin an organization from the inside is known as "The Simple Sabotage Field Manual," which was written in 1944 and declassified in 2008. The manual outlines various techniques that can be used to disrupt an organization's productivity, efficiency, and morale.
The techniques described in the manual include:
👉Insist on doing everything through "channels": This involves enforcing strict hierarchy and bureaucratic procedures that slow down decision-making and limit creativity.
👉Make "speeches": Deliver lengthy speeches filled with irrelevant information to waste time and demoralize employees.
👉When possible, refer all matters to committees: This involves delegating responsibility and decision-making to committees, which can lead to indecision, delays, and confusion.
👉Bring up irrelevant issues as frequently as possible: This tactic involves focusing on minor details or issues that are not relevant to the organization's goals to distract and demoralize employees.
👉Haggle over precise wordings of communications, reports, and resolutions: This involves nitpicking and arguing over small details of documents to delay progress and cause frustration.
👉Refer back to matters decided upon at the last meeting and attempt to reopen the question of the advisability of that decision: This involves questioning decisions that have already been made to create doubt and undermine confidence in leadership.
👉Advocate "caution": This tactic involves urging caution and avoiding risks, which can stifle innovation and progress.
👉Be worried about the propriety of any decision: This involves questioning the ethics and morality of decisions, which can create uncertainty and indecision.
👉Encourage bureaucracy: This tactic involves creating unnecessary paperwork, procedures, and rules, which can slow down progress and waste time.
👉Demand written orders: This involves insisting on written orders for every task, which can create a bureaucratic bottleneck and slow down progress.
Overall, the techniques described in the manual are designed to create inefficiency, confusion, and apathy within an organization, making it easier to undermine and ultimately destroy from the inside.
