Strait of Hormuz risks deepen despite slight rise in crossings

Vessel activity through the Strait of Hormuz increased slightly on 14 July, with 21 confirmed crossings recorded, according to #MarineTraffic data. Commercial traffic accounted for most movements, including vessels carrying crude oil, LPG, methanol and iron ore.

The security outlook, however, deteriorated further after three additional attacks off Oman were verified, bringing the reported total to 56 confirmed incidents and 17 seafarer fatalities. No vessels used the Omani route, while traffic continued to favour Iranian-approved routing, highlighting declining confidence in the alternative corridor. The Strait remains passable, but renewed security threats and reports that the US may consider a 20% cargo transit toll are adding further legal and geopolitical uncertainty for operators.

انگار پرده افتاد، نمایش تمام شد و ایران پشت پرده باقی ماند. با چشم دور شدنشان را دنبال می‌کردم.
انگار نوزادی باشی، زاده در لحظه بلند شدن هواپیما و به فرود بند ناف را بریده و از مادر جدا کرده باشندش.
من هرگز در «تبعید» نبوده‌ام: ایران همیشه با من بوده و هیچ وقت اتصال میان ما قطع نشد. مگر نه همه ما از ایرانیم و در آن خاک جوانه زده‌ایم؟
غم ته گلویم، در آن روز سرد زمستان در راهروهای فرودگاه آمستردام نمی‌دانم چرا صبح امروز دوباره خودش را به یادم آورد: تیر تیزی در گلو شد و قطره اشکی که تا روی گردن غلتید.

Hormuz traffic stays cautious

Confirmed crossings through the Strait of Hormuz zone fell for a second consecutive day on 9 July, dropping to 22 from 30 the previous day. Activity remained largely low risk, with commercial traffic only marginally exceeding non commercial movements. Operators continued to favour the Iranian route, while the Omani route saw just one crossing, reinforcing the lasting impact of recent security incidents near Oman. Although no new physical attacks have been recorded since 7 July, renewed US-Iran military escalation has weakened confidence that diplomacy will provide near term stability.

Let me remain sceptical about any genuine or well-intentioned investigation into anyone or anything when the desired outcome and conclusion appear to have been determined before the investigation has even begun.

Especially over the past year, following the sharp escalation of tensions between Iran and the United States, it seems to have become increasingly common for academics, journalists, analysts, and experts to come under attack simply for doing their work. I am aware of numerous baseless campaigns against individuals which, although often too weak to have any meaningful impact, are nevertheless persistent enough to amount to harassment.

As always, I unequivocally condemn such cowardly acts, wherever they occur, particularly when they target members of the media and academia.
May academic freedom, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech be protected and upheld everywhere in the world.
