Trump called him a "loser" and a "sleazebag." He was elbowed out of the Senate and replaced with a Trump endorsee.

Now, facing terminal illness, Sasse has become one of the most compelling voices in American public life – thoughtful, challenging, and wise about what actually matters. He speaks with ease and precision on the toughest of subjects.

So which is it? Is Ben a sleazebag or not?

Is that what Bob Mueller's family said when Trump danced on his grave? "Good. I'm glad he's dead." Mueller was a Purple Heart Vietnam vet. When Trump celebrates Sasse's death, will that still be "hyperbole?"

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I take people as full-package deals. I think the vision we all admire in Ben now is the same one that motivated him in 2021. He hasn't changed. If you hated him then but love what he's saying now, take a long minute to think about that.

I really don't think a grown man who spent his career kissing Trump's ass would have got to spend his last days telling us how to live, and die, with dignity. Not because he wouldn't still try, but because it wouldn't land – we wouldn't care. But Ben kept his integrity, and we're all better for it.
