@worstall@BBCr4today Yes, its good news - but some way to go not to be a European outlier. And a very long way to go to even be a normal European country again. Incidentally, there have been more slight falls than rises in recent years across Europe. And nowhere in Europe is as unequal as the USA.
@worstall@BBCr4today OECD data differs (and included many more countries):
https://t.co/uffYIHCH79
UK at 0.367 in the most recent data is higher than Spain (0.312), Germany (0.309) and Italy (0.325) and the highest it has been in the time series. Data is also after tax paid and benefits received.
@bphillipsonMP pls hear moving, important+hopeful @amolrajan report from Unity Primary School nr Colchester. A safe, nurturing place in area of high deprivation, helping parents struggling with cost of living, so helping their children. https://t.co/8ahSjVS5X6
@dannydorling with @amolrajan 7.14am. 60s 70s lowest regional #inequality. ‘Now we have largest inequalities in the all of Europe.’ Others improved we went backwards. “We are the most unequal country in Europe individually (bar Bulgaria)..+within our cities as well as regional.”
Listen to @dannydorling on @BBCr4today at about 07:13. U.K. could have been up there with Finland, but Thatcher drove us down the inequality route, which has been catastrophic
This Government must be the beginning of the turn around and @RachelReevesMP Mais Lecture is the start
War of choice waged by Israel & US on #Iran is spiraling out of control. The world economy has been upended, threatening impoverishment & hunger for many as higher energy costs flow through. Many lives are being lost. Lebanon too is suffering. Stop it now! https://t.co/9RI4DR98OG
Burnham adds: “Following recent events, I think the time has come to call an end to this era in British politics - when politicians got too close to wealth, too seduced by the notion that deregulated markets would provide the solution.”
Not a subtle message there to Starmer

Some great speakers at this years @MalvernFI including two of @CompInPolitics key collaborators @dannydorling and @MikeBernersLee. It's a wonderful festival and this years theme of social change couldn't be more relevant.
Thanks for sharing, Danny, and for contributing such an important piece to this and every edition of Public Sector Focus in 2025. We’re truly grateful for your continued support.
Ending 2025:
How a student was arrested, detained, and deported over a visa issue when the pandemic delayed graduation — an ordeal that exposes the harshness of Denmark’s immigration system, now being considered for imitation by the UK.
