Have you ever heard of the ocean skin? 🌊
It's a tiny 0.01 mm layer of surface water, typically cooler than the water below.
It might be thinner than a human hair but due to its cooler temperatures, it's helping our oceans absorb more carbon dioxide.
New research states that the ocean absorbs about 7% more carbon dioxide each year than previously thought due to the cool skin of the surface.
When integrated across all oceans this additional carbon absorption is equivalent to 1.5x the carbon captured by annual forest growth in the Amazon rainforest.

SOCATv2024 was recently released, revealing that the #ocean#CO2 observing effort is down to levels of a decade ago. 📉🌊
To highlight this, I repurposed the warming stripes as „#observation stripes“ to visualize and draw attention to the issue on #ShowYourStripes Day.
@SOCAT_CO2
Do you use the SOCAT data and do you know the SOCAT data is in an alarming decline? If so, you may want to know the impact of this decline on the global ocean CO2 sink estimates.👇 @SOCAT_CO2@Dorothee_Bakker@gcarbonproject

If you are interested in high resolution ocean processes, in particular related to surface waves, let me know!
(and watch this space for cool SWOT-derived swell observations in the coming week ...)
Thrilled to have this outstanding group make the trip up to #eimr2024 using low carbon means. As a conference seeking to aid the proliferation of sustainability by bringing together evidence gatherers, an in person event is a difficult one to balance. Let's make it worth it!
