When the Severe Alert system was established in 2024 it was made clear that:
“There will be a very high threshold for its use based on strict criteria centred on an immediate risk to life.”
Tonight’s use at a national level clearly doesn’t hit that threshold and opens the door to future misuse of the system.
Labour needs to publish who signed off the decision to use the alert and the criteria that they were using.
@GOVUK absolute abuse of the Severe Alert system, which is now being turned off on my phone. You've totally undermined the purpose of the system. Send a text, for sure, but don't abuse emergency broadcast systems to tell us about not using BBQs.
Democracy is how we enable peaceful regime change in the executive and legislative state instead of violent revolution.
I think one of the deepest political question of our time is how we enable peaceful regime change in the bureaucratic and regulatory state.
UK regulation has gone bonkers (maybe some time ago). You get fined tens of thousands when operating in a competitive market because you have shambolic management, or don't keep a paper trail of pricing decisions, or don't want to talk about it.
I am not sure when the CMA went completely bad, but the suggestion that its empire (or another part of the bureaucracy) should be expanded by forcing petrol stations to give it real-time price data and using that to prop up an ugly Waze competitor suggests it was some time ago.
@POferries I am looking to book a Calais-Dover crossing with you using Tesco Clubcard Boost (must book 7 days ahead) but I am not sure yet how many passengers I’ll have in the car. Will there be a £20 amendment fee if I need to change the number of passengers after having booked?
@dam_health I did a Mandatory Day 2 PCR (Results within 24 hours) at 9:31 am in Luton on Thursday. Do you have my results? I have no text and it says "Pending" in the app.
@dam_health https://t.co/mNr0yKKPbd says "My results are late, what should I do? If you are unable to access the results … get in touch with a our customer service team and one of our call agents can assist you." But nobody answers the phone. Help please.
@philipjcowley If Labour were opposing, gvt policy would be better (or better presented) to limit rebel numbers: "free testing for nightclubs" not "papers-please covid passes"; “extra support and testing for at-risk NHS staff” not "let’s sack the unvaccinated”. All MPs matter!
