Marketing is an important part of the music business.
But artists can forget they have one strong USP, and that’s who they are.
My biggest advice to artists is to be yourself.
Focus on making good music and trust in yourself. 💪
Last week Tennessee became the first state to sign off on legislation that protects musicians from threats posed by AI.
This is a major step forward in protecting artists’ rights.

Are playlists the new radio station?
They offer a space for community on streaming platforms that are otherwise driven by impersonal algorithms.
Playlists: just like radio except globally interconnected and with the potential to reach millions of people.
Streams are an artist’s livelihood.
And they’ve no control over them.
Artists can’t control what an algorithm is going to push but they can control their brand and the community they build around it.
You can’t wait for streams, you have to go get them.

In 2024, the strength of an artist’s fandom can define a career.
But it isn’t something that can just be engineered.
You can’t work around the power of an artist’s relationship with their fans.
Communities will define an artist’s career but the artist has to be given control.
Tech innovation has given us a music industry that is more accessible than ever before and the barriers for entry keep getting lower.
It’s time that the industry started properly looking at all the untapped talent that’s out there…

Music isn’t ‘content’.
It’s music.
To get music out there and to find success, artists have to play the algorithm/social media game.
But we can’t lose sight of what makes music what it is - art.
