What is strange about it? China is building out its nuclear arsenal just for us. Its neighbors are quite concerned with its expansion into their territories, and rely on us as a counterweight. China has identified AI as the industry it must dominate in the near future.

We’d treat them as what they are while cooperating like we have with hostile states on issues like nuclear proliferation - USSR style.

50,000+ fake accounts behind proxy networks, with banned accounts quickly being replaced with new accounts continuing the same requests. And the requests all designed to generate synthetic training data for coding, tool-use, reasoning traces, data analysis, etc etc. Also using Anthropic as a reward-model grader.

And Anthropic can map this fake account behavior to Chinese model releases.

Anthropic has presented a strong case with third party corroboration.

The only question is how much of the Chinese models success is the result of this theft and how much is the result of solid work.

But the problem is multidimensional. You call it open source, but it is only open source for the same reason Meta was, to reduce capitalization of US frontier labs - open source as a financial weapon.

There is zero guarantee that Chinese labs will remain open source, but there is a guarantee that if US labs fall behind, they'll never catch back up. So when China uses access to frontier models as a political weapon, there will be no recourse.

So the question is, do we trust the US with this power or China...
