๐ We just reached 50 dives!
We are currently on expedition with @BiosferaCV in Cape Verde deploying cameras down to the deep sea in areas which have never been seen before
We have seen black corals, butterflyfish, trumpetfish and sea bream
๐ฅน And even a manta ray!

The deep sea camera is being prepared for 100+ metre dives today in Cape Verde
As well as collecting never seen before videos of deep sea in the area, this project is training and providing equipment to local scientists
๐จ๐ป Excited to join the first BAIT expedition around Cape Verde with @BiosferaCV
BAIT aims to give equipment and training to local researchers to collect more data within unexplored offshore areas
โ @Amelia_Bridges demoed how to build the camera system
Now for the trials!
Finally got a chance to do some painting over the holidays, so here is a lovely nudibranch based on one of the ROV images from the JC136 cruise that I helped to annotate last year as part of my ResM! Already missing the @DeepSeaCRU ๐
In Lisbon with @im_ahilario speaking at this important event celebrating science collaboration between UK & Portugal, & discussing how to deepen links. For us the @UNOceanDecade provides an important opportunity. @challenger_150@PlymUni@DeepStewardship https://t.co/GrAlt6Ak8y
Mesophotic reefs are thought to be resistant to bleaching due to their 30m+ depth. Diaz et al. show bleaching of corals at depths of 90m, possibly due to warm surface waters being pushed deeper.

Very proud of our recent work led by @PoppyBest3 & @mat_upton showing an important ecosystem service provided by #deepsea sponges that could help combat #AntimicrobialResistance
En route to the @UniofNewcastle to deliver a seminar on the use of ecology to support sustainable management of the #deepsea! Many last minute edits needed owing to the stellar work of #BBNJ negotiators though! ๐๐๐บ๏ธ
Day 5 of Field Week, and wow what an interesting lecture that was to end on! We used data collected from ROV footage by Kerry Howellโs @DeepSeaCRU & began learning how to identify & quantify species from the beautiful deep sea #deepsea#data#taxonomy

Further important messages from @CRHClover about the importance of the ocean in climate mitigation and the role of MPAs in protecting important areas. Our research has demonstrated exactly this at Tristan da Cunha. #UNOceanConference#UNOC22 https://t.co/UbyMevsocR
Made it to Bremen!!! Excited to be at the opening ceremony of @ICRS_2022 and looking forward to a week of presentations and networking! ๐ชธ ๐ @Clara_Diaz_974
Today's fish is the Black Scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo)! These deep-water predators support a European fishery. However, they have slow growth rates, and are susceptible to overharvesting. They've been seen hanging vertically in the water!

To make informed decisions on human use of deep sea requires we can forecast possible outcomes of actions. In other words ecosystem modelling. But what models & what are input data. Come & discuss at our #OceanDecade predicted ocean lab session #16DSBS

So proud of @DeepSeaCRU members @Amelia_Bridges@Kirsty_McQuaid & @Clara_Diaz_974 for their excellent presentations at #16dsbs today, so much fantastic work, well done guys. More to come later this week ๐
