#SaveThamirabarani: This is how Tamil Nadu’s only perennial river Thamirabarani is highly polluted in Tirunelveli corporation limit. “The #DEWATS (Decentralised Wastewater Treatment System) structures were constructed just to deceive the #NationalGreenTribunal which heard my petition for 8 years. None of the 10 DEWATS is functional. The corporation sewage is let to the river without treatment. Unless the state government forms the #ThamirabaraniRiverRejuvenationCommission, it cannot make this river pollution free,” said environmentalist S P Muthuraman.
"In 2022 order, the NGT observed that the water in Thamirabarani River has a Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of 20-30 mg/l and contains very high fecal coliform. However, the city corporation did not take any concrete steps to improve the water quality of #Thamirabarani, which is the drinking water source to #Tirunelveli, #Tenkasi, #Thoothukudi, #Virudhunagar and #Ramanathapuram districts," he added.
