धर्म की परंपरा को देखें तो सीता के सम्मान के लिए रामायण में युद्ध हुआ, द्रौपदी की रक्षा के लिए महाभारत हुआ। लेकिन आज पहली बार धर्म की ऐसी परिभाषा सामने रखी जा रही है, जिसमें धर्म के नाम पर एक 15 साल के बच्चे को निशाना बनाया जा रहा है।

क्या धर्म इतना कमजोर हो सकता है कि उसे अपनी रक्षा के लिए एक बच्चे को नि���ाना बनाना पड़े? शायद नहीं। धर्म अगर सच में धर्म है, तो वह इंसानियत, न्याय और कमजोर की रक्षा के साथ खड़ा होगा—न कि नफरत और डर के साथ।

A 26-year-old man, who was picked up by the police in an assault case and allegedly tortured in custody at #Manamadurai in #Sivaganga district, died while undergoing treatment on Sunday.

The youth, R. Akash Delison, was an engineering graduate from the Scheduled Caste.

Sources said the #ManamaduraiPolice had arrested Akash and his acquaintance Guna, both from Manamadurai, two days ago for allegedly attacking P. Jayakumar, 37, and R. Azhagar, 40, with sharp weapons and inflicting injuries on them.

Based on a complaint from Azhagar, a case was registered at the Manamadurai police station under Sections 324(2), 296(b), 118(1), 109(1), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on March 6.

The police said Akash Delison is a history-sheeter, facing three cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and one case of attempt to murder.

The Sivaganga district police said in a statement that Azhagar and Akash Delison belong to the same community and were known to each other.

The statement added that while the police inspector and his team went in search of Akash, who tried to escape from custody. In the process, he sustained serious injuries after falling from a bridge. After a formal arrest intimation was given to his family on March 6, he was admitted to the Government Sivaganga Medical College Hospital.

On March 7, the Manamadurai Judicial Magistrate visited the hospital and remanded him in judicial custody till March 18, with a direction to lodge him in the convict ward at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai. Hence, he was shifted to the GRH, where he died.

Sources at the GRH said Akash had suffered multiple fractures and the death could have been due to fat embolism, though the exact cause would be known only after a post-mortem.

Henri Tiphagne, advisor to Joint Action Against Custodial Torture and human rights activist, said that with this, the number of custodial deaths reported in #TamilNadu in recent years had risen to 26. He alleged that police atrocities against the Scheduled Castes and other underprivileged communities continued in the State.

Arguing that such incidents should be a matter of shame for society, Mr. Tiphagne demanded that the post-mortem be conducted strictly in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the #MadrasHighCourt. He said the magistrate should ensure that the victim’s family members were allowed to witness the procedure and a copy of the post-mortem report was given to them by the end of the day.

Claiming that Akash died of police torture, his family members and relatives refused to accept the body and staged a protest on the Madurai-Rameswaram Highway near the Manamadurai bus stand. They demanded strict action against the police personnel involved in the assault, financial compensation, and a government job for a family member.

Talks held by municipal chairman Mariappan Kennedy failed to convince the protesters. Revenue Divisional Officer Jepi Gracia and Additional Superintendent of Police Francis also attempted to hold negotiations, but the blockade continued, causing a massive traffic jam stretching several kilometres. Vehicles were diverted through Sivaganga and Kamuthi.

The victim’s father, Rajesh Kannan, and mother, Anandhi, alleged that the police took them to the station, saying that they were looking for their son in connection with a case.

“They threatened us, saying, ‘If we catch your son, we will kill him’,” Mr. Rajesh said.

The police released them later, saying that Akash had been arrested, and he sustained a leg fracture. When they saw him, Akash informed them that the police had beaten him.

“We have suspicions. Under the pretext of investigation, the police took him to a forest area and broke his leg. That is why he died. Had our son committed something wrong, the police could have let the law take its own course. But we cannot accept their beating him to death,” Mr. Rajesh added.

26-year-old Engineering Graduate Akash Delison from Krishnarajapuram in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu died because of torture and assault inside the custody of @tnpoliceoffl in March this year.
For over 100 days, his dead body remained in the mortuary of Madurai’s Government Rajaji Hospital as his parents refused to perform his last rites until the guilty police officers were arrested. Later authorities cremated his body on 17th June under a Madras High Court order, despite protests from his family.
Now, Parents of Akash were detained after they attempted to breach Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's convoy in a frantic bid to stop the chief minister's convoy, apparently to petition him. Needless to add that no Policemen responsible for the murder of Akash were arrested even after 6 months of the incident. What other options do these helpless parents are having to demand Justice For their Son

PS: Tamil Nadu is a notorious state for custodial death and Police brutality.
