LAUNCH - NEW DEMOCRACY RESEARCH HUB 🚀
In 2018 we launched Democratic Decay & Renewal (DEM-DEC) to track democratic trends worldwide. 2 things are clear: negative trends get the most attention; and navigating the noisy space of democracy research can be bewildering.
2024 was a very busy and mixed year, but more than anything it will always be the year that we lost our dear friend Julius Yam. Thinking of you my friend and wish you could be here with us still.
#friends #2024
Dedicating my first ever watercolour to Julius- I tried to capture his mix of calm demeanour, hilarious dry sense of humour, bright spirit and the long road he travelled in a short life, from HK to Chicago, Oxford to Australia, and so many places in between. He was one of a kind.
Congratulations again to you Tarun, @DineshaSam and Swati - and all the authors - on such a rich, illuminating and agenda-setting collection. Edited collections are such a hard format but you show how good they can be. This book will no doubt spark many much-needed conversations
Endlessly amazed that @gautambhatia88 has a parallel career as a fiction writer as well as one of the leading constitutionalists in the world. Looking forward to reading this. Congratulations Gautam!
Thank you to everyone for such positive feedback on our re-launch of Democratic Decay & Renewal as Demoptimism this year 🤩 Our mission is to seek out and provide evidence-based hope for democracy. In a world of challenges, despair is not an option.

Are there reasons for optimism about the US elections?
For the Electoral Regulation Forum starting Monday, Dr Adrian Beaumont has provided a text considering this question.
You can submit a question on the text, which we will gather for Adrian:

⚠️⚠️ A THREAD ABOUT PEOPLE OF GAZA :
Do you know what the situation in Gaza is like right now? The north is labeled a “combat zone,” and the south an “safe area,” as the occupation claims. But where is safety in this hell?
