If anyone here watches Black Mirror, how do you think the episode "Nosedive" relates to this discussion? (the one with the rating) It is definitely showing social media through a pessimistic lense -most of the episodes tend to. #COMM3120

I think some social media platforms try to do this, but it's still hard to enforce. I've reported some comments on Facebook and they usually tell me they can't do anything about it.

@dquilter6 definitely. Not only our society as a whole, but each individual and how they decide to use social media.

@KerstenHarrison It is sad. Sometimes I catch myself feeling "not in the moment" because I'm not caught up with my Instagram timeline, but I'm totally missing the point and need to be more in the moment in real life.

@Becks_42 I don't know about that. I think due to growing up with more social media, a lot of people feel more comfortable connecting with a stranger online than in person. I think this can sometimes help people with social anxiety create friendships that might've otherwise been impossible

Social media creates a platform for “connections”, not real friends. Individuals compare and contrast lives. Yet it also creates opportunity to connect with what is happening in today’s world and with those you may never have a chance to connect with. I am a realist #COMM3120

@Ben_Bckts @jtoolgoinham I've definitely seen social media distract me from my goals. I think being able to connect with so many people online makes me more worried about my online presence rather than more important things in my life.

@minimomblake @kasslikesdal I do social media at my job, and I've had to study albeist language to be sure I don't say anything online that could upset anyone. They told me about competitors who went bankrupt over things they said online!

#COMM3120 I am definitely a realist with social media lenses. I do see myself, however, leaning more towards the positive while recognizing that there is bound to be negative.
