One of my absolute favourite television presenters, Sir David Attenborough, turns 100 today. Heartiest wishes to him on this remarkable milestone.

Around 2006, David Attenborough’s series ‘Planet Earth’ was released. That was still the era of DVDs. From that time onwards, I became almost obsessed with the work of this extraordinary man. Watching every new series that followed Planet Earth - first on DVDs and later on Blu-rays, as soon as they were released - became a passion for me.

Then came ‘Africa’ in 2013. Its opening montage was so breathtaking, such a masterclass in visual storytelling, that I have lost count of how many times I must have watched it.

Whenever I watch Attenborough’s documentaries, the way he narrates, I feel as if I am listening to a fairy tale. You become immersed in the story he tells, and once you enter that world, it remains with you forever. Many people have made documentaries over the years, but very few have possessed the rare storytelling gift of David Attenborough.

When one looks at Sir David Attenborough’s life, one is astonished at the life this man has lived, and how much he has given to the world. From black-and-white television to colour broadcasting, from high definition to 3D to 4K, he remained present through every technological transformation, narrating the story of nature with the same sense of wonder. And while doing so, he never tried to dominate the screen himself. Instead, he kept nature, the very thing he deeply loved, front and center.

Many people live to see 100. But there are a few rare individuals who spend their entire lives searching for something, and for whom that search itself becomes their lifelong companion.

Over the last hundred years, what has Attenborough not witnessed? The rise of television, the Second World War, the transition from black-and-white screens to colour, the satellite revolution, the jet age, the digital age, the internet age — and perhaps most importantly, humanity’s own transformation from being merely a part of the nature to becoming a force capable of destroying it in the name of development. In many ways, he witnessed the fastest century in human evolution. Yet despite all these changes, he continued to tell the story of nature with undiminished passion and curiosity.

The Attenborough who once introduced the world to the sheer beauty of nature gradually became the Attenborough who began warning us, with visible anguish, about how humanity itself is destroying that very world. If one wishes to see the scale of ecological decline that has happened within just five or six decades, one can trace it through the journey of David Attenborough’s documentaries themselves.

BBC’s public broadcasting demonstrated that deeply enriching content on science and nature could be created in a visually stunning yet accessible way. But it was David Attenborough who showed how powerful, precise and emotionally effective such storytelling could truly become.

I could write much more about Attenborough. But instead, I would especially urge Marathi youngsters to watch his documentaries. Watch them not just for the storytelling, but also to understand how beautiful nature truly is, and how recklessly we are destroying it in the name of roads, bridges and endless development.

There is one more reason why my colleagues in the media should watch Attenborough closely: when your understanding of a subject is deep and authentic, you stop worrying endlessly about whether your content will be watched or what needs to be done to make it “viral.”

Attenborough was born in an era when humanity was still discovering the mysteries of of our world and nature with curiosity and wonder. Today, at 100, he is witnessing a time when that same humanity risks pushing the planet and nature towards destruction. May he live long enough to once again see this Earth flourishing, vibrant and alive.

वरळीतलं प्रकरण हिट अँड रन नाही तर हत्याच...

वरळीत नवरा बायको प्रवास करत असताना मागून एक बीएमडब्ल्यु कार बाईकला धडक देते.. नवरा बायको गाडीच्या बोनेटवर पडतात. नवरा लगेच स्वतःला बाजुला होतो आणि बायकोलाही आपल्याकडे खेचणार तेवढ्यात बीएमडब्ल्यु वाला निर्दयीपण अपघातानंतरही जिवंत असलेल्या महिलेच्या अंगावरुन गाडी नेतो. महिलेची साडी गाडीच्या टायरमध्ये अडकते. या महिलेचा नवरा आरोपीला रडवेल्या चेहऱ्याने थांब थांब म्हणतो तरी आरोपी गाडी पुढे नेत २ ते अडीच किलोमीटरपर्यंत त्या महिलेला रस्त्यावरुन फरफटत नेतो. गाडी पुढे नेत असताना गाडीसोबत फरफटत जाणाऱ्या महिलेला किती वेदना होत असतील याचा विचार सुद्धा आरोपी मिहीर शहाच्या डोक्यात येत नाही. इतक्या क्रुरपण तो गाडी पुढे नेत राहतो. आपल्या अब्रुची सर्वाधिक पर्वा करणाऱ्या या पत्नीच्या, दोन मुलांच्या आईचा जीव जातो आणि बऱ्याच अंतरापर्यंत फरफटत गेल्यामुळे अंगावरचा कपडा सुद्धा शिल्लक राहत नाही. पण सगळे कपडे निघुन गेल्यावर सुद्धा आरोपी फरफट सुरुच ठेवतो. आणि हे सगळं हतबलपणे तिचा नवरा बघतो त्याची बायको मरेपर्यंत..

पुण्यातल्या पोर्शे अपघाताप्रमाणेच मुंबई अपघातातला आरोपी मिहीर शहा सुद्धा या अपघातापुर्वी बारमध्ये गेला होता. जवळपास १८ हजारांचं बिल दिल्यानंतर तो निघाला. गाडी बदलली. आणि त्यानंतर कावेरी नाखवांचा जीव घेऊन एक कुटुंब उध्वस्त केलं. आरोपी थांबला असता तर ही महिला आपल्या कुटुंबासोबत आज सुखरूप असती. पण मिहिरने फरफटत नेऊन तिचा जीव घेतला. मग हा अपघात कसा? ही तर हत्या झाली.

पण मुंबई पोलिसाना तपासाबद्दल विचारल्यावर या प्रश्नांची उत्तरं त्यांच्याकडे का नाहीयेत. ?

१. या अपघातातला पीडित आणि ज्याने डोळ्यासमोर आपली बायको गमावली तो माणूस स्वतः सांगतोय की मिहीर शाहाच गाडी चालवत होता तरी पोलिस यावर काही का बोलत नाहीयेत.
२. पोलिसांनी त्यावेळी गाड़ीत उपस्थित असलेल्या ड्रायव्हरला ताब्यात घेतलं. पण ड्रायव्हरने गाडी कोण चालवत होतं याबाबत काय जबाब दिला याबद्दल पोलिस का सांगत नाहीयेत. ?
3. पुणे पॉर्शे प्रकरणासारखं इथे सुद्धा प्रकरणत ड्रायव्हरवर ढकलण्याचा प्रयत्न होतोय का?
4. बारमधून आरोपी मिहीर शाह बाहेर पडताना, आणि ड्रायव्हर ड्रायव्हींग सीटवर बसनाचंच फुटेज पोलिसांनी कसं बाहेर येऊ दिलं. ते आरोपीच्या सोयीसाठी का?
5. ज्या भागात अपघात झाला तिथलं सीसीटीव्ही फुटेज जर बाहेर आलं तर त्यात स्पष्टपणे कळेल की गाडी कोण चालवत होतं. म्हणून हे फुटेज बाहेर येऊ दिलं जात नाहीये का ?
6. अपघातानंतर कावेरी नाखवांना आरोपीच्या गाडीने फरफटत नेलं, त्यामुळे मृत महिलेच्या अंगावर एक कपडा सुद्धा राहीला नाही. पण पोलिस फरफटत नेण्यासंदर्भात कुठलीही ठोस माहीती देत नाहीये.
७. गाडीने फरफटत नेतानाच्या मार्गावर अनेक सीसीटीव्ही आहेत. मग पोलिसांना याची शहानिशा करण्यासाठी ईतका वेळ का लागतोय?
8. पोलिसांनी ड्रायव्हरला अटक केली, गाडी मिळाली. मग आरोपी मिहीर शहा नेमका कसा फरार झाला.?
9. यावेळी जर गाडी ड्रायव्हर चालवत होता तर ड्रायव्हर फरार झाला असता. पण इथे नेमकं उलटं होतंय. ड्रायव्हर पोलिसांच्या ताब्यात आहे आणि मिहीर गाडी चालवतच नसेल तर तो का फरार झाला.

या प्रश्नांची उत्तरं पोलिसांकडे नाहीयेत कारण मरणारी व्यक्ती तुमच्या माझ्यासारखी सामान्य होती. आरोपीच्या गाडीपेक्षाही कमी किंमत तुमच्या आमच्या जगण्याची जिवाची आहे.

आता बीएमडब्ल्यु, मर्सिडीज, पॉर्शे अश्या महागड्या कार विकतानाच मालकांना एक खुन माफ करावा तसं एक दोघांना चिरडलं तरी खून माफ करावे. किंवा लोकांचे जीव घेण्याचं परमिट द्याव.

When the politicians of a country are so corrupt, destructive, ruinous, insensitive, foolish, violent-minded, and lacking in aesthetic sense, what else can you expect but such devastation?

Jagan Mohan Reddy, who was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, cut down thousands of trees on the Rushikonda hills, which had stood for millions of years, and built this lavish government building by carving up the mountain. Something beautiful could have been created on this hill without all this destruction. But how can politicians create something without first destroying something?

On the grave of nature, this 500-crore mansion has been erected. To break the mountain alone, 95 crores were spent from the government treasury. And an additional 21 crores were spent on beautifying the area they themselves destroyed.

While there is a need to preserve each tree, this shameless leader has targeted the very roots of the mountain. Heat records are being broken. In a state where nearly 2,000 people have died of heatstroke, this man, who was the Chief Minister, sacrifices thousands of trees. As the public, we deserve to suffer in the heat. We are the ones who elected such worthless leaders... now suffer the consequences.

1. मराठी भाषेला अभिजात भाषेचा दर्जा मिळावा.
2. देशाच्या अभ्यासक्रमात मराठा साम्राज्याच्या शिक्षणाचा अंतर्भाव करा.
3. शिवरायांच्या गड किल्ल्याना गतवैभव प्राप्त करून द्यावं यासाठी समिती नेमावी
4. मुंबई गोवा महामार्ग लवकर पूर्ण व्हावा
5. मुंबईतल्या रेल्वेवर लक्ष द्यावं, पुरेसा निधी द्यावा.

देशाच्या इतिहासात पंतप्रधानांसमोर या मागण्या पहिल्यांदा कोणी केल्या असतील. गड किल्ले, मराठी भाषेच्या अभिजात दर्जाचा प्रश्न कोणत्या नेत्याने थेट पंतप्रधानांसमोर मांडावं ही खूप सुखावणारी आणि आश्वस्त करणारी बाब आहे.
