We’re calling for a wealth tax that would only apply to people who have above £10 million in net assets. That means around 99.6% of people wouldn’t pay a penny more.
So louder for those at the back. A wealth tax targets the super-rich who've been able to opt-out for too long.
Portes "Theres a lot of nonsense talked, including on Sky, about the spiralling welfare bill.. as a proportion of our national income.. its lower than it was 15yrs ago & its pretty much back to what it was under Thatcher.. this idea its out of control is just wrong"
Spot on!
I didn't mention it at the time because I thought it might get in the way of the campaign.
I did mention it on stage at the convention centre in Manchester a few days ago on 24th June.
On a visit to Southbank Centre in 2008 or 2009 Andy (Burnham) told me that he was a fan of Tony Harrison.
What didn't I say throughout his campaign? This is one for poetry nerds like me.
The word 'us' was 'reclaimed by Tony Harrison in his powerful poem 'Them and Uz' (1974). It was also reclaimed by Andy in his campaign VOTE FOR ANDY FOR US (2026). Analysis of 'uz' (or 'us') in the original poem helps us understand the contemporary use in the campaign.
Coincidentally Anthem of the North echoes this relationship. It mentions "Flocks of vowels" as unique migratory susurration of the north.
Anyway. There you have it. One for you Blake Morrison and one for you Simon - Tony being Yorkshire n'all.
Apologists for Starmer are notably avoiding the fact he ran for Labour leadership on a relatively left-wing platform he clearly had no intention of implementing. A very cynical move which has damaged already low levels of public faith in politics even further.
Perhaps the soon-to-be-departed Prime Minister might have first acquired a political education: we have in Shakespeare’s history plays a literary heritage offering an extraordinary exploration of politics as the ways of betrayal.
Albania has officially drawn the
line, Sazan 'lsland is being cleared. In an stunning turn of events, Albanian authorities have
launched an active enforcement operation to kick
out foreign developers and private security
personnel occupying Sazan Island. The decisive
action marks a total collapse of the controversial €1.4 billion luxury real estate deal that aimed to turn the protected national marine reserve and
former military base into an exclusive private playground for global elites,
The eviction comes after four consecutive weeks of historic
hundred-thousand-strong protests that completely
shut down the capital city of Tirana, refusing to allow their native coastlines and ecologically sensitive wetlands to be privatized by foreign
investors, the Albanian public unified under a
single, unyielding demand: "Albania is not for sale, the courts faced with a historic political crisis, mounting
domestic fury, and a widening anti-corruption
investigation by special prosecutors (SPAK), the
government was forced to pivot, by deploying state forces to reclaim Sazan lsland, Albania has
sent a clear message to international billionaires
and foreign developers trying to bypass environmental protection laws, This historic victory for citizen-led activism proves that the collective voice of a nation can successfully overpower backroom corporate deals and protect sovereign land.
The people spoke, and the
government had to listen.

The cases completely collapsed in court in 1985 after it was revealed that the South Yorkshire Police had fabricated statements, committed perjury, and presented discredited evidence.' Fortunately, Britain has a Bermuda-registered mass circulation newspaper owned by a French-domiciled billionaire, a television station owned by a Dubai hedge fund and a political party backed by a Thailand-based crypto tycoon to remind us of the importance of patriotism
Mamdani: "Of the Margret Thatcher quote, the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money. If anything my friends, it seems you eventually need a socialist to clean up the mess."
My own story of @AndyBurnhamGM being a genuinely decent man: undergoing chemotherapy at 17, I was invited to his roundtable with young people on the NHS. I couldn’t make it as I was too unwell. This letter arrived a few days later. 1/2
