Today @SecPompeo announced the creation of the Iran Action Group. It is tasked with implementing the Trump Administration's misguided Iran strategy, which has already cost the U.S. credibility & pushed us away from our allies.

I find it hard to believe this administration is ready to sign a *treaty* with the Islamic Republic whose very legitimacy they question. Hook's statements are window-dressing for the proclaimed "maximum pressure" strategy. There is no diplomatic goal here.

Far more important is the fact that Iran's ability to produce fissile material and put a nuclear warhead into its missiles was blocked by the JCPOA. Unfortunately, Trump, Hook and others appear intent on sabotaging those gains: https://t.co/RRWK4sUS87
Important piece from @lrozen dissecting the Administration's false conflation of ballistic missile types. Also re-upping my old piece on false conflating nuclear and ballistic issues in Iran's strategic calculus:

“[M]ore pressure on [#Iran] is not going to contain their bad behavior, or the behavior we don’t like,” said @EllemanIISS. “I just don’t see where this more aggressive strategy is headed. If I’m Iran, I look at it as a prelude to regime change.”

Brian Hook's claim of consistent and strong support for the Iranian people does not stand up to the sanctions snapback that they oppose or the ban on Iranians entering this country.
“It is this calculation that perhaps exposes the deepest & most dangerous flaw of an indiscriminate max pressure approach: willingness to rely on mil force to achieve a goal that was already met via peaceful means.” #IranDeal@brewerericm @arianetabatabai https://t.co/mu5E6oFwe1
@BahmanKalbasi And to say "the deal failed," when 6 of the 7 parties that agreed to it, as well as the independent expert agency that monitors it, insist that Iran is in full compliance suggests that it's not the deal that failed so much as Pompeo and Trump's fulminations against it.
In Vienna yesterday, our allies made it clear that the US is isolated by Trump's decision to violate the #IranDeal. We not only risk putting Iran back on the path to a nuclear weapon, we risk the alliances we would call on to face such tough challenges.

Hmmm. @JohnKerry got Iran to shut down its nuclear weapons program. @realDonaldTrump has heaped praise - in ways “unseemly, unprecedented, and inconsistent with US foreign policy” - on the most brutal dictator in the world in North Korea, and he has achieved nothing.
This goes beyond Iran & the Trump admin. Once Europe starts thinking creatively and creates institutions independent of the US, it will be a permanent fixture of our transatlantic alliance. Our nation will be less effective with fewer financial tools at our disposal. (2/2)
The Trump administration continues to pressure our European allies into following a faulty Iran strategy, despite their protest. The result? The creation of U.S.-free institutions that will hurt our influence and prestige in the long term. https://t.co/AnxkLRJ536
Yet again the President shows his only Iran “strategy” is antagonism.
Fact: John Kerry didn’t break the law.
Fact: Trump himself is responsible for undercutting our national security by violating the nuclear agreement.
John Kerry had illegal meetings with the very hostile Iranian Regime, which can only serve to undercut our great work to the detriment of the American people. He told them to wait out the Trump Administration! Was he registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act? BAD!
"Not for the Faint of Heart" by @wendyrsherman is now the definitive account of the nuclear negotiation with #Iran. You can disagree with her all you want, but it would be difficult to simply discount the historical document she has provided. https://t.co/wP3S025Umn
So far, only one of the the seven parties to the #IranNuclearDeal is violating its commitments -- the United States. "Iran Continues to Meet JCPOA Limits, Despite Sanctions" https://t.co/gkulZpZwsf
If @SecPompeo wants to improve the morale of America’s diplomats, he will abandon gimmicks, listen to the people he aims to lead, & focus on convincing President Trump to respect & empower @StateDept. https://t.co/9Nz5KNLlM7
The Trump Administration is "pursuing a policy of regime change" in Iran, says @JohnKerry. "And the United States of America, historically, does not do regime change very well."
