I am shaken by what happened tonight at Central Synagogue. A man disrupted the service and attacked both a congregant and a member of the security team. I can only imagine how scary it was for everyone present. Thank goodness no one was seriously injured.

I am in contact with the NYPD, the DA’s office, and the synagogue to be supportive in any way that I can. My heart is with Central and Jewish New Yorkers who feel incredibly vulnerable right now.

Earlier this evening, an individual disrupted Shabbat services at Central Synagogue in Manhattan. As synagogue security was escorting him out, he struck a member of the congregation, damaged synagogue property, and then spit at and headbutted a member of the security team. An NYPD sergeant working a paid detail at the synagogue immediately stepped in and took the individual into custody.

I have spoken with the rabbi of the synagogue, and I’m relieved that no one was seriously injured. Those who were hurt were evaluated at the scene and are doing well. There are no known additional threats at this time, and additional NYPD resources have been deployed to the synagogue. The investigation is ongoing.

I understand the sanctity of this space and its meaning for congregants. Central Synagogue is where I grew up. In joy and in sorrow, it has always been a place of comfort and peace. What happened there tonight is deeply painful. A place of worship should never be a crime scene.

Oh my, how have we survived without the millions of people who used to take restaurant reservations, book airline tickets, operate toll booths, and print folded maps! How was it to hail a taxi in the Bay Area? This is the anti-abundance agenda.

I served on the National Security Council under President Clinton. I was Joe Biden’s Deputy Staff Director of the Senate foreign Relations Committee. I voted for Kamala Harris and have been a vocal critic of many dangerous and undemocratic actions taken by President Trump.

But I’m not a blind tribalist and am perfectly comfortable praising President Trump for bold and courageous actions in support of America’s core national interests, as he took last night.

Iran has been at war with the United States for 46 years. Its regime has murdered thousands of American citizens. Its slogan “death to America“ was not window dressing but core ideology. It was racing toward a nuclear weapon with every intention of using it to threaten America, our allies, and the Middle East region as a whole.

No actions like this come without risks, and I imagine the story will get more complicated over time, but that’s why these types of decisions are complicated.

Although I believe electing Kamala Harris would have been better for our democracy, society, and economy, as well as for helping the most vulnerable people in the United States and around the world, I also believe VP Harris would not have had the courage or fortitude to take such an essential step as the president took last night.
